Yes, queerbainting is a real concept and it has been a big problem in media.

However, isn't it a double edged sword to start witch-hunting real people because "he sounded too fruity in interviews" "he used feminine outfits"? It literally will go full circle with people adhering to strictly gendered styles in fear of being dragged by "woke" people.

Now, having said that, I think it is possible to have real people "queerbait", but it is NOT related to their appearance but by their own words. I think going around giving half-truths during interviews or misleading answers about your preferences is weird. Intention is everything.

no. and the constant accusations as of late prove that because they're almost always stupid, baseless and created from someone with the IQ of a grape. it's such an overused term that I wish would disappear. It's like yall can't handle the fact that people don't owe you a constant glimpse into their bedroom and not all men follow traditional gender roles and stereotypes.

queer baiting to me is in reality straight baiting because these artists do it to make themselves look better/more progressive/virtuous infront of the straight masses, not because they wanna sell a couple thousand more albums or movie tickets to gheys. so yeah. but from this perspective, yes, to me it is real.

I feel like there are layers to this.

1. You have the traditional meaning - queerbaiting, as in implying in a piece of media one, or two, or multiple characters might be queer through innuendos and marketing, and then having those characters not be queer/get a partner of the opposite gender while their sexuality remains unaddressed (and let's be honest, sexuality unaddressed + opposite gender partner = straight)

2. Then there is the situation of male celebrities being vague on purpose when talking about their sexuality (often times when nobody asked in the first place), claiming to be unlabeled, suddenly becoming a fashion icon and using gender neutral/nonconforming imagery in their promotional activities when before they didn't. All the while publicly dating only women

   The one above is not even targeted at queer men, but at a majority female fanbase who is more enamored with the concept of their fave's alleged queerness and the smoke-and-mirrors quality of it, but who most of them would self-combust slowly if their fave actually came out as gay.

3. More like a 2b - there are specific situations, especially in k-pop, but much more pronounced in Thai Boys Love series - heavy performance of fan-service. Still mostly performed by men, targeted at a female fanbase. But there have also been cases of women (Girls Love series, female k-pop groups) performing fan-service, still targeted at a female fanbase.

4. Then there is queerbaiting aimed at gay men. This can be mostly seen on TikTok, when str8 guys will use hastags #gay, #bi in all their posts, act like fools and say corny stuff like "when I'm with my TWINK, etc.", and have a link towards their onlyph@ns where they post the same sh1t they post on twitter/instagram, and have a paywall to see a quarter of their balls in a blurry shower pic .

What I've noticed overall is that queerbaiting has become heavily TIED to fandoms. Fandoms which treat characters in a piece of media like real people, when those characters are supposed to just be narrative devices and a means to an end. These people would claim bigotry & queerbaiting from the creators of that media when their fantasies don't get fulfilled, and try to make moral arguments based on their dissatisfaction, even if the criteria from my first point does not apply.

Also, there are fans who don't realize or conflate the fact that celebrities are both human beings AND a brand/persona at the same time. They see an actor's relationship with a woman, or even another man as a blocker against the materialization of the fictional ship/pairing between that actor and his male co-star.

But let's make no mistake, actors/their publicists/TV show creators are aware of these type of fans (increasing in number and acting insane online), and often times do employ queerbaiting tactics to MILK them for engagement.

In TV shows and movies sure but in real life no. Men being feminine doesn't make them queer and femininity should be normalised. Let's not embrace toxic masculinity.
