He dated that huge influencer, for sure networked with right people, and you know, he could've networked hard, so he's getting opportunities from the industry.

plenty artists have "been around for years" building an audience and don't get such a sudden big industry push like this without like a real hit or two / a very acclaimed trending album idk something tangible and significant?

In my opinion him getting a big industry push after years of hustling (releasing full length projects, opening for other artists' tours) is not the same thing than coming out of the blue (LITERALLY nobody has heard of you before, no digital footprint) to arrive on top.

Don't even like him that much and those Country influenced tracks give me a headache but he's not an industry plant. I've had him in my last.fm bookmarks for years.

I'm editing my post because I came up with a good analogy: if some major music label decided to invest big in Alice Chater right now, would you call her an industry plant? After all these years trying to make it? If anything it would be justice.

First heard of him through Emma Chamberlain and in the past week thanks to Hilary Duff

Yeah, he's been around working hard for years and it even was one of his earlier songs (minimal, 2019) that gave him some internet notoriety back in the day. He seems pretty wholesome and probably met the right people when he was with Emma and rubbed them the right way. The breakup also seemed pretty amicable and respectful so she probably kept putting a good word around. To me this is years long hard work paying off.

well a lot of plants need to be watered and since he's been in the major label system for many years now it's not unfathomable they're finally seeing a window of opportunity for their investment and are launching a mainstream push but it just feels random timing I think it'd appear more organic to wait and go all in if there was something more hyped / buzzed about him to follow up this "viral hit"... its like someone decided he MUST happen and people WILL know about him now... I'm sure the SNL booking appears premature to most people that learn about him, especially when this viral moment isn't even THAT undeniable? y'all are basically saying he's being rewarded for not being able to properly catch on / break through after many years (when many other artists could just get shelved indefinitely)  

 

I know him since the start of covid. He was sort of the original Sombr.

Is every artist invited to SNL supposed to be hugely successful/popular? Genuine question because I'm not American. I feel like I've seen there celebs I barely know/don't know at all.

not always huge, but usually big in their scene and getting a lot of buzz or critically acclaimed. and SNL is still a pretty major / prestigious industry platform (especially during Grammy voting period) Madison Beer (stream "bittersweet" out now) has literally had a longer and bigger career than him...

 

his music sounds like a more country version of Sombr's to me…. and yeah he's not that exciting 

 

Bowen Yang has already been his "Sally" so maybe for SNL he brings out Taylor

I hear his name came up randomly but I've only ever seen clips of him on some Jake Shane interview. I've never heard a single song by him nor have I heard anybody reference or mention him outside of TikTok.
