Rita Ora: what went wrong?

Featured Replies

She lacks discernable talent in literally all areas.

She's not a great singer. She doesn't write songs. She's not a visually creative person. She can't dance.

I really wish she hadn't had an acrimonious break-up with Calvin Harris in 2014. The timing couldn't have been worse.   His production (lead single) "I Will Never Let You Down" was gearing u

To be fair, she survived the 2nd era curse which is not easy to do for UK pop acts. Especially since she had more obstacles in her way than most do (at least that is public knowledge).    I thi

More like after 2015 started. She never really had a hit after I Will Never Let You Down.

She was never really a thing in Canada (assuming US as well) outside Black Widow.

One thing about Rita is that she is a good singer. And she's had quite a few hits in the UK over the years that helped build up her brand.

I think what makes Rita stand out in comparison to other UK artists such as Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and Pixie Lott that had some hits but didn't have a lot of commercial longevity is that Rita has spawned a ton of memes - the retweets, Wendy Williams, 2 pound Primark, MOGUL - and then she also kept herself in the UK spotlight with judging gigs while she had issues releasing a second album. I think people - especially pop culture obsessed gays / public worldwide - know of her more.

She partied during the lockdown and faced massive backlash in the UK

Either way, British pop singers tend to have an expiration date, except for Dua and Adele, who have truly become global

And then this - she was memed but then people had a proper reason to dislike her.

I think Dua on the other hand had some really good songs that became hits and seemed to be really likeable and down to earth and potentially a better team behind her than Rita.

Her two singles are not as good as her earlier work. In fact i think her recent music is the music worst music she's ever released wow omg

Or go the complete opposite direction and become a critical darling - Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Charli XCX etc. That looks like the same path Raye will be following down too.

Rita getting 8 years worth of legitimate hit making is really impressive though all things considered. UK popgirls typically max out at five.

Exactly! I love it when smart people quote me :dramacat:

I think people lost interest with the big gap between her debut and second album of 6 years and then the 5 year gap between that and her 3rd album. She didn't keep up the momentum. Lockdown partying and that embarrassing tweet "someone hacked my account" because it didn't get the retweets she wanted also didn't help her career in the UK. I see her as more of a TV personality than a pop star. spacer.png

I didn't even know she was still releasing music I thought she went from the "party and bullshit" song to judging X-Factor (?) and took the Kelly Rowland route

I think the biggest problem is that she never was consistent in anything she did music related.

She never been a consistent touring act, so she never built a steady audience

I think she had a nice repeak with Phoenix in a lot of markets but she kinda ruined it after that. No consistent releases. Very mixed bag of songs/projects that she released after Phoenix

No bops

Rita has no bops? Are you fr? But I don't expect more from a gaga stan

The music is not clicking. She only records random pitches instead of trying to create another great album like phoenix. Even you & I was better than her recent singles

The way u say this in the same breath :rip: the recent singles are not bops

I was excited about her when she very first debuted, but she wasn't doing anything that particularly stood out enough for her to be her own artist. She's not really "needed." All of her music could be dispersed to similar artists, who already makes music of that same style. She never carved out her own lane.

She's in an indie label. That literally explains it. No radio promo or playlisting. I'd would happen to almost anyone in her shoes. All these conspiracies are BS
