Welcome to the Halsey base ! 

 

This base thread is dedicated to the talented bestselling artist, poet, actress, painter and mother Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, professionally known as Halsey.

 

 

The idea behind her stage name comes from a reference to the Halsey Street station of the New York City Subway in Brooklyn, and is an anagram of her first name (Ashley). 

 

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born on September 29th, 1994 in Edison, New Jersey. 

Prior to her music career she would garner a dedicated fanbase on Tumblr by posting poems and such.

On that same platform she would announce the release of her very first song on Soundcloud — 'Ghost'.

 

                Era 0.5 - 'Room 93'

      [released october 27th, 2014]

 

Halsey signed her very first recording contract with Astralwerks, and released her debut EP in 2014.

The EP features 5 songs, 2 of which would end up on the debut album, those being 'Hurricane' and 'Ghost' (although the other 3 would land a spot on the tracklist for Target/Japanese exclusive variations). The EP would debut at #159 on Billboard Hot 100.

By the way, 'Empty Gold' is a well known fan fav, yet Halsey completely hates it. I just want to mention this because I kinda agree with both sides, the bridge eats, but the rest of the song is very 2014 doomcore teenagers against the whole dystopian world vibe.

 

             Era 1 - 'BADLANDS'

            [released august 28th, 2015]

This tumblr classiqué would pop up almost a year after the release of the EP, spawning well known hits such as 'Colors', 'Control', 'New Americana' and 'Gasoline'. This album is pretty much the epitome of Tumblr's peak energy - the grungy sound and aesthetic, the worldbuilding and the plot having a dystopian undertone, which would become more relatable as years went by.

This was also the start of the infamous number two curse, as the project debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200. 

Halsey would also go on a tour, which would tease the next era with its visuals.

 

Era 2 - 'hopeless fountain kingdom'

           [released june 2nd, 2017]

With this project Halsey decided to focus more on the plot and dark pop sound, the album having a Romeo and Juliette-esque story and the songs abandoning the grunginess of the previous record, which did get her a few hits such as 'Bad At Love', 'Now Or Never', 'Walls Could Talk' (how tf) and 'Alone'.

Despite this record being one of Halsey's most underrated projects, it's the only album that hit #1, so i guess it did something right.

 

      Era 2.5 - Cursed Collaborations

 

Halsey has collaborated with a lot of artists throughout her career, like a LOT.

The reason I'm bringing this up in between 'hopeless fountain kingdom' and 'Manic' is because 97% of these songs were released in 2016-2020, so this just seems fitting chronologically.

So... I think I can say this for everyone that 99% of these songs are completely unlistenable and the main artists are always problematic in some way, except like a couple of them, so I'll just bring up the most popular ones.

 'Closer' is pretty much her most popular collaboration, it reached number one and currently has 3 billion streams and is an anthem for 2016core tropical pop music aesthetic as a whole.

There is also a G-eazy song that has a billion streams, this one was recorded while they were dating and..this is basically her 'ME!'...nobody talks about it. Not her fans, not g-eazy, not herself. And neither should you. It's abysmal.

 

She has also popped up on songs by Benny Blanco, BTS, Yungblud, Juice WRLD, Justin Bieber, Lido (another ex btw), PARTYNEXTDOOR, some ? guy, Thirty Seconds To Mars, Post Malone (which she snatched away from, 'Die 4 Me' is way better as a solo Halsey song.), Kelsea Ballerini and etc. 

She also been rumoured to have recorded a collab with The Kid Laroi for her fourth album and..thank ******* god it didn't happen.

 

                   Era 3  - 'Manic'

     [released January 17th, 2020]

The era technically started with 'Nightmare' and 'Without Me', although 'Nightmare' would end up being scrapped and on her next album. 

This project is pretty much the beginning of her more introspective work, as she dives into her identity and story rather than a fictional movie/book plot. This album ranges from country ('You should be sad') to rock '3am' to piano ballad ('More'). 

Halsey segregates her discography into 2 kinds of albums — Ashley albums and Halsey albums. 'Manic' and 'The Great Impersonator' are the two Ashley albums, that's why both have a "A1/A2" branding.

This album ended up being blocked from the #1 spot. Yeah. I Am Not Mad.mp3 about it. Totally.

She was also supposed to have a world tour, but the pandemic stopped her. So instead she decided to work on her next project... and also get pregnant along the way.

 

  Era 4 - 'If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power'

        [released August 27th, 2021]

 

This era is pretty much when she stopped caring about the commercial success of her work, this album is produced by the Nine Inch Nails and it's pretty much her most rock-iest project, containing songs like Easier Than Lying', 'You asked for this', 'honey', 'The Lighthouse'.

This project also has a theatrical film directed by American filmmaker Colin Tilley, titled after the album and featuring its music. It was screened in select IMAX cinemas around the world on August 25 and 26, 2021, leading up to the album release. Despite that it still got blocked by some male record. ******* hell.

 

  Era 5 - 'The Great Impersonator'

      [released October 25th, 2024]

Honestly this is the best album of all time, and this isn't an exaggeration.

This project has went through a lot of changes. Initially it was supposed to be a lot lighter, at least judging by 'So Good', which was the initial lead single. However Halsey got diagnosed with lupus and a T-Cell lymphoproliferative disorder, which influenced the project. She really believed that this album would become her last, which is why the project ranges from various genres and time periods while dealing with topics such as trauma, grief and death.

Fortunately Halsey's health had gotten a lot more maintained now and she decided to tour for this project.

 

  Era 6 - H6 a.k.a. 'Last Trick Motel'?

 

 

This is where we are at right now.

Throughout the For My Last Trick Tour Halsey has been hinting at something — she dropped 'safeword' in February and performed 2 brand new songs ('Lucid' and 'Carry The Weight'). This genuinely could be anything — a deluxe edition of TGI, a new album, literally anything.

 

As of the time of me writing this, Halsey has also started celebrating the 10th year anniversary of 'BADLANDS'. So there are a lot of things to look out for as a Halsey stan. I am sad that we didn't get the live Manic album though.

 

   Era xyz  - Everything Else [activism, filmography, etc.]

 

 

Ashley has co-directed a lot of her music videos ('Alone', 'Now Or Never', 'Strangers', etc.).

She has also starred in multiple movies such as "A Star Is Born", "Americana" and "MaXXXine".

She is also a voice actor — voicing Porscha Crystal in "Sing 2" and Wonder Woman in "Teens Titans Go! To The Movies" and Cindy in "American Dad!"

She has also published a collection of poems "I Would Leave Me If I Could" in 2020, which deals with Halsey's relationships, her past, love, bipolar disorder and etc.

 

Throughout her career Ashley has contributed to multiple causes. Halsey took part in the mental health and suicide prevention awareness campaign called "I'm Listening", which was hosted by radio network Entercom and broadcast live on September 10, 2017. 

Following the 2017 Women's March, she sent out a tweet that promised to donate one dollar to Planned Parenthood for every retweet it received. She ended up donating $100,000 to the organization.

Halsey delivered a speech to more than 200,000 protesters at the 2018 Women's March she performed a five-minute poem titled "A Story Like Mine", in which she told personal stories of sexual assault and violence throughout her life.

In June 2020, she launched The Black Creators Fund, founded to provide financial support, resources, and a platform to black creators.

 

 

                     Final Thoughts

Halsey has made a huge impact on the music industry as an artist. Her music promotes inclusivity, vulnerability, honesty and imperfection. She might not be the one on the chart pedestals, however her artistry and actions will always remain a rarity and inspiration to many upcoming artists.

People should give her a chance, she was kinda problematic in her past but her two latest albums have been so amazing.
