Forced "Hits"/Chart Manipulation: When Artists Won't Accept Failure

Featured Replies

and why it Hurts Organic/Smaller/Good Artists, those who have no $$$/Machinery behind them.

Let's talk about a song that's struggling on the charts, yet somehow, it keeps getting MAJOR PUSH.

BBHot100 Performance:

The songs chart run, so far: 29 - 13 - 33 - 31 - 29 - 19* - 37

Clearly, no real upward momentum. :deadbanana4:

*Album Release Week

Spotify:
4 weeks ago, the artist visited Spotify HQ. Suddenly:

- Spotify published article about her on their official site.

- The song was placed on the Cover + #1 spot AGAIN (after more than a month).

- The song is in 2700+ playlists with a total reach of 200M+ listeners.

And yet? It's still doing less than 3M daily streams. :deadbanana4:

Apple Music:
Despite solid playlisting, the song is N/A on Apple Music charts.
If people really wanted to hear it, wouldn't it chart atleast?

Radio:
Just two days ago, the song was receiving negative updates.
Now?

- It's in POWER ROTATION on Z100.

- Had a +1.02 update, the 2nd biggest audience gain today.

From struggling to radio-favorite overnight? :deadbanana4:

Promotion:

- Music Video aired during the GRAMMYs, prime exposure.

- Song played during the Super Bowl, one of the most-watched events of the year.

- Official March Madness promo song, constant sports coverage.

- Live, televised performances on SNL & Howard Stern, huge platforms.
Billboards on Times Square, Music Video etc.

That's awards shows, ads, sports events, live TV. This song is promo'd everywhere.
Yet, It Never Clicked. :deadbanana4:

For all the exposure, there's less/no organic traction.
This song was given every opportunity. Yet, the general public didn't care.

Meanwhile, more deserving artists, the ones who actually connect with listeners, never even get a chance. Cause they can't:
- Artificially inflate numbers
- Buy exposure through playlisting & radio deals
- Do not have this machine behind them

The music industry should reward quality, not connections.

Interesting how you'll gas up and spin one artist's stats to your narrative but downplay and twist another's. I wonder why that could be.

I am so obsessed with Lady Gaga that there was a time when I was a (temporarily)homeless gay teenager and prioritized flying to another state to attend an extra show on the Joanne tour, where I then slept in the airport starving.

Somehow op is more obsessed with Lady Gaga than I am, because I really don't know all these random statistics off the top of my head.

Imagine writing all those essays as a Katy/Avril stan and hiding behind Billie avis while pushing 40.  :deadbanana4:

Way too ******* loud, stupid, and ANNOYING.

To more seriously address this topic: this is a prime example of why focusing exclusively on the US is foolish. Sure, you could argue the support it's getting seems excessive for what is arguably just a moderate hit in the US, but it's doing so much better internationally that it makes up for that and then some when you account for the entire world, which then validates much of the support it's getting.

US Chart Run

29 - 13 - 33 - 31 - 29 - 19 - 37

Global Chart Run

10 - 5 - 9 - 9 - 10 - 8 - 13

Like...it's obviously a respectably sizable hit globally, I don't know why we're trying to pretend it's not doing well and the support it's getting is thus somehow suspicious. :dies:

I don't even know that many in-depth facts about my fave's recent single…
