Then you have members like heckinglovato who keep antagonizing and being hostile or passive aggressive just because people don’t see things exactly the way they do. There’s always this condescending tone, like anyone who doesn’t fully agree is ignorant or morally lacking. Even when someone tries to step back, take accountability, and do better, they show up in the thread acting hostile instead of engaging in any kind of good faith.

 

What makes it worse is being accused of not caring about anti-Arab sentiment or even contributing to it, while completely ignoring the fact that my admin has been the one responsible for removing most of the openly racist and anti-Islamic users from this forum. Those people were allowed to post here for years without any consequences. We put a zero tolerance policy in place largely because of that.

 

We’ve done a lot to make space for conversation about the Israel-Gaza conflict, including removing people who violate our rules or say disgusting things about the atrocities happening there. At the same time, there’s this pattern of throwing around the word “Zionist” at anyone who isn’t in lockstep with a specific stance, even when those people have been very clear in denouncing the IDF, the Israeli government, and the role the US has played in enabling their actions. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But to unfairly tarnish the substantive work we’ve done to clean this place up is completely disingenuous.

Your achievements sound good on paper but ring hollow when you're online criticizing the resistance movements of a nation facing ethnic cleansing and genocide. But thanks for enacting ZTPs against people who want me dead, I guess?

Some people have truly lost it when it comes to discussing politics in particular on this forum and it happens in almost every single thread. The moment anyone strays away from the groupthink some members have (it's always the same users btw) it's mass downvotes, name calling and bad faith arguments (as proven in this thread also), it's lowkey crazy.

Honestly I think the solution is more bans, not less. I don't want to risk another 14 page back and forth with somebody with delusions of being a political influencer on a pop culture forum but there's a literal extremist cult festering in this community. 

 

I've seen hate crimes and civilian murders on US soil justified, joked about, and scrutinized on some tinfoil lizard people **** doing mental gymnastics to maintain black and white narratives about complex issues.

How about a site-wide referendum on keeping or removing reactions or just the downvote button? Clearly the issue is too controversial to solve on the administrative side, let the users who are affected by it decide if they should stay or go. Democracy!

People being mass-downvoted for saying that two innocent people didn't deserve to die in Washington, DC was concerning for me. When did we start losing all nuance? You can simultaneously acknowledge and be outraged by the genocide and the endless atrocities perpetrated by Israel occurring in Gaza without justifying (or worse, celebrating) anti-Semitic violent crime.

I'm truly not the one who wants an echo chamber. You're the one earlier on this page criticizing people for taking steps to remove abusive commenters who have targeted you, because they didn't go far enough for your taste. You are literally begging for everybody you disagree with to be gone. 

 

The "more bans" I was calling for would be aimed at people who closely align with my politics.

I was criticizing someone for their criticism of Palestinian resistance, not for their inaction on banning anti-Palestinian rhetoric

I don't know whether or not that individual is a zionist, I was critiquing specific actions/statements they have made in the past regarding the topic

Mentioning that somebody is critical of palestinian resistance measures, without mentioning that they have been MUCH more critical of the genocidal response to those measures, is falsely trying to characterize them as a zionist. Hope this helps.

Oh that's not how it works at all 

 

Being critical of genocide is the bare minimum, and it doesn't make you immune to criticism when you're trying to appear as having a "balanced" approach, an approach that many Arabs, Palestinians (including myself), and pro-Palestinian posters on this forum view as harmful 

 

I don't have to kiss someone's foot every time they say genocide is bad and we deserve to live  and I sure as hell will ONLY focus on calling out rhetoric that I view as regressive, even if it means that I will eventually join all the others who got banned for speaking up
