I'm not 100% sold on It's A Mirror. Feels a bit weak after Describe or Slip Away. Excited for the album of course but I fear this isn't the strong start I've come to expect!

It's a Mirror has really grown on me. It feels very natural and down to earth. The only thing I don't love is how Mike's voice is buried in the mix. Still pre-ordered because he always delivers. 

 

I have so many thoughts and feelings. first, the song is absolutely breathtaking. but the VIDEO??? baby, THIS is art. it feels like Mike knows something about queerness that none of us do and he is letting us into it. it feels like a celebration and dissection of the gay/straight friendship, among many other things.

Incredible. Can't stop thinking about the song since I heard it and the video since I watched it. You are so right on Mike organising queerness into a system of symbols that is brand new to me but simply makes sense

Everything I've heard is stunning so far. I'm probably in the minority, but his first two albums remain my favourites (all stunning works though) and the melodies on the three released tracks so far give me more of that feeling, perhaps slightly more traditional songcraft? I don't know how to explain it. It's infused with warmth. 

Better than Ugly Season. Need more time with it but loved it all on first listen, if the songwriting is a bit *too* vague this time around for me. Hard to connect when it's all so metaphorical and sparse. 

alright I think this'll be my first first listen of the night  Ugly Season was cute, but the three albums that preceded it were all extraordinary sooo

Me & Angel is soooo reminiscent of his piano ballads from his first three albums  a little bit of No Tear in there, beautiful

this is obviously stunning, but much less immediate than No Shape and SMHOFI. Need more time with it, but In a Row????? WOW! Just wow. 

also, Hanging Out is the sequel to Run Me Through I desperately needed

so far my standouts are Me & Angel, Full On (AHHHHMAZING), Capezio, and In a Row  this album very much feels like it could've been a logical successor to Too Bright with its deep exploration of ambient textures

 

it's his most downtempo album since Put Your Back N2 It, but it's still very lovely! every album of his has always had an immediate standout that I play on repeat ad infinitum on nightwalks (Too Bright was Fool, No Shape was Wreath, SMHoFI was Jason, Ugly Season was Teeth…) and I think Full On will likely be that for me from how I'm feeling rn 

In a row has the potential to be in his top 3 of all time. Absolutely stunning

This a tough album and seems to come from a darker place than his last few, which is maybe why I already feel drawn to it more nn. It's more intimite and raw and I love when he gives in to his most melancholy side (though I hope he is well ofc).

hope this doesn't come across as parasocial but this entire album I thought... this is the music of someone dealing with the fallout of relapsing. 

Really going to need to sit with this album for a while. I appreciate the textures and warmth his collaborators added, though they don't surprise as much as I would hope. One interview mentioned that none of the songs retain his demos, which I don't think has happened since the start of his career. He really utilized the 'band' for this album. Some songs sound like freaky metamorphosed Fleetwood Mac tracks reminiscent of "Go Ahead", which I love. Current non-single faves are "Left For Tomorrow", "Full On", "In a Row", "Hanging Out". 

veeeeery tender and beautiful record. no front teeth, dion, in a row, and hanging out are my favourites as of now.

 

agree w the sentiment in here that the soundscape is more similar to his earlier work - makes this a nostalgic listen almost
