It's more because streaming is the dominant platform and background music is the most popular form of consumption now. People would rather stream mood music in the background than hardcore vocalists. There's a reason Kelly Clarkson has a fraction of the streams Billie has.

SM tends to screw up with timing for aespa, they are always up against some huge hit or surprise viral success. It's happened ever since Next Level.

I would agree that they underperformed in the sense that they could be bigger if they had been promoted more, but you're right - Dirty Work had 11 weeks in the top ten and Rich Man is at 6 weeks and counting.

 

Dirty Work getting blocked sucked because its two versions had more points than the song at #1. I have a feeling that SM is in negotiations for contract renewals with the girls which is why they've taken their feet off the pedals in terms of promo. I'm hoping for a February 14th pre-release and March 14th album release. They better do Studio Choom, a dance practice, It's Live AND Killing Voice this time. It's crazy that they're the top digital act of 2025 without being on the most important promo slots.

International stans think the music video chart counts for the Hot 100. A weekly #1 there isn't even 1,000 copies. Back when songs would sell 500k+ a week, it would still be less than 2k.

I checked out Yuta's release just out of curiosity, and I actually liked it. Even if he's kinda ugly, he deserves to shine more in 127.

 

 

Did you hear Jisung's cover? I love his voice! SM needs to give him more singing parts and mute Haechan.

I mean this is more of a promo/management issue than an underperformance. Chart wise both songs were huge. 

 

Rich Man was on the verge of surpassing Golden (when it was much stronger) but SM effectively dropped all domestic promotions after just 3 days. Huge mistake. 

 

You could be right in that they are negotiating contracts, but aespa is a huge revenue stream and there isn't really a replacement in the company to justify being more lax with aespa, so idk.
