The poor opening weekend of "Mufasa: The Lion King" threatens to end the year on a sour note for Disney.

Were it any other time of the year, the $35 million domestic/$122 million global opening — well short of pre-release projections of $50 million and $180 million — would be a sign of an impending flop. But this is Christmas, a time of miracles… and long box office legs.
The movie's budget is $200 million.

Reviews for "Mufasa" were mixed with a 57% Rotten Tomatoes score. That provided no help in creating any sense of urgency or increased interest among general audiences. Currently, "Mufasa" enjoys an A- on CinemaScore — the same grade as the Disney animated flop "Wish" and "Wonka".

Mufasa" could face a situation where pleasing opening night moviegoers isn't enough to overcome its image among the wider populace as an inessential prequel that answers questions about "The Lion King" that they didn't ask.

The best case scenario is a $575 million final total which would put "Mufasa" in the same territory as last year's remake of "The Little Mermaid," which grossed $569 million worldwide. Compared to the heights of the Disney remake series in the late 2010s, such a result would be a disappointment.

I loved it. Probably because Beyonce speaks maybe like 2 lines.

I've heard people who don't want to see it because they think Beyonce's in it a lot and they also didn't like the first one she did that they saw.

I had no idea Beyoncé was doing yet another (flop) Lion King movie. Give it up, girl! 

I heard from the other fanbase that these movies are flopping while there is not enough of the female vocalist involvement

Because it's live-action/CGI. A 2D-animated Mufasa prequel would've smashed.

The trailer looked stupid. We talked about doing a family movie on Christmas tomorrow, but this is the one playing in the small town theater I'm currently visiting, and everyone said pass to it lol

4 family movies competing with each other is crazy. It's hurting their box office run. Even Moana is slowing down and likely won't reach 1B. Sonic flopped. Wicked should be grossing much more.

Sonic didn't flop, what are you on? 
 

Moana 2 is well on its way to 1-1.1b despite bad reception and Wicked broke domestic BO records and similar international gross to the biggest musical films ever.

yeah, long before we knew she wouldn't be mentioned or heard of in any of the trailers/promotional material bc she literally says 3 words at the end of the movie. but you knew that already

Not really since like most of the public, I won't be watching this movie

Because of Sonic 3, Moana 2, and Wicked  Disney strangely released this movie against their own Moana sequel, it's like they didn't even believe it would be successful.
