Y'all, I'm not making a troll thread and this may look like one after my previous thread about Gaga ageing like milk but I'm genuinely asking- what happened with Joker 2? 

I wasn't really following it much after the trailer but I thought the movie was going to be a big success. News just came out of it opening with 68 million dollars in its first week, and I think that's a far outcry from the performance of the first film?

Gaga decided to take a small L for the kats to feel like they had at least a cute little win. She's literally the saint of pop 

The stupid decision to make it a musical. No one asked for a superhero movie turned musical. The movie is for the straights chile.

Tbh the title/name of the movie.

 

if it was called Joker 2 I bet more people would watch it but the "Folie a Deux" is kinda off putting

The fact that it is a musical. It received so many backlash because people can't stand the idea that a movie can be both a musical and dark. People tend to have a negative view towards musicals because it is cheesy which is sad.

 

Another thing is probably the early mixed reviews by the critics. I am hoping that once the audience scores come in people will show more interest.

I don't know, in talking to people about upcoming movies the consensus I seem to be getting is that they took too long. It's just been awhile since the last Joker and despite the things this one has going for it, I don't think people feel anticipation like they may have a year or 2 ago.

Because it isn't yet? Those are just predictions based on pre-sale which is not always super accurate. 

To answer your question: critics seem to think it is because Todd's direction is messy and Gaga has been underutilized.

- Underutilizing Gaga in the film.

- Making it a musical and alienating fans of the first film.

- Premiering it a month early in Venice where it received mixed to negative reviews, thus creating bad buzz around the project.

- Joaquin alienating a large chunk of the industry by his decision to drop out of the Todd Haynes movie.

They removed the stairs scene and made it a musical… understandable why it may flop

Let's wait until it's out at least, it would be weird to give an ill-informed opinion on a movie that only 0.00000000001% of the world population has watched    

Gaga is not one of the reasons so this thread already looks so stupid. 

 

You also could easily read reviews. 

 

1- Less Gaga than expected, people thought she was lead but find out she's barely in it.

 

2- Todd's questionable choices

 

3- Half of the movie is in the courtroom 

 

4- Joaquin leaving the set 2 weeks before shooting also pissed industry people.
