I remember hating Ellie Goulding because her song Lights showed up on top every time  It took a lot of patience for my undeveloped brain to recognize she was good too.

I remember stanning her when she wrote for Instant Star.  When she initially tried scrubbing the original FA video.

Actual indie princess. :heart2:

Not you being based in sociopolitical issues AND music :clap3: I'm glad to see some ISTANnt Star praise too, Alexz Johnson tore on that show :jonny5:

I'm glad to see some Little Machines love :clap3: Don't Go Home Without Me is a masterpiece. I also am bummed to hear you don't like PEP that much but I know it was very divisive. I personally love it (Beside Myself, Prodigal Daughter, Salt & Vinegar, Okay Okay, Nd Rent are all amazing imo) but I hate Money In The Bag so much and Voices Carry is a snooze so I agree that it does contain some weak material.

yeahhh I wish I liked it better honestly! but the thing is she's always so herself so even if it's lesser project I'm always sure to find some stuff I love on it. like I loooove Beside Myself, Prodigal Daughter, Salt & Vinegar, and Okay Okay, I just think the rest didn't quite feel like what she was aiming for. but again, I'll always check out anything she releases, she's got a fan for life in me! I have a feeling that L6 is gonna be something really special based on what we've heard of Damage alone :duca:

They played her a lot in Canada but the bar is so low to get played on radio because of our content laws, an artist really just has to be Canadian to get decent play.

She has some cute bops though!

My friend worked at Michael's during that era and said her music was always playing.

I've heard don't go home without me in forever 21 during that era and fight club in hollister that period

Isn't it some law that Canadian radio stations must play a certain amount of music by Canadian artists or did I just pull that out of my ass? :rip:

Yeah Lights always be playing in the most random places. I heard Okay Okay at a local pub last year and heard My Boots at some clothing store ages ago.

You're so lucky to have heard Siberia and Flux & GOD live :jonny5:

Multiple reasons. As others mentioned, her stage name was terrible. Her sound wasn't what was popular with the mainstream. She was too alternative for pop, which was very much in the Katy/Kesha/Rihanna era, and the emo scene was on life support at that point. A big part of it was she just came into a dying subgenre scene, all the emo bands were using more electronic and pop elements in their music and less rock/metal, which is similar to the music she was making so that along with the fact she didn't have a strong enough artistic identity destined her to becoming a somewhat faceless flop Canadian female artist ala Skye Sweetnam. Fueled By Ramen pretty much only had Paramore as their only relevant artist by then too.

She also kind of reminds me of an early Poppy and probably would've benefited from a gimmick like she had instead of just trying to be… wherever she was trying to be.

Also, CRJ didn't take her spot because Carly had mainstream pop appeal Lights didn't have. CRJ also didn't have a stupid **** ass stage name. Ellie Goulding kinda did her in when Lights the song became a worldwide hit tho. Let this be a lesson why a stage name needs to be more than a random word.

It's not even just a stage name, Lights is her legal name too :rip:

You're 100% correct!
Growing up there were a ton of artists I had no idea were only known in Canada because of this.

That's such an interesting and cool law. I also like knowing that taxpayers pay for film/TV production as an appreciation for the arts

Lights was a nickname derived from her last name and at some point she legally made it her first name. Her birth name is Valerie It's still a chosen name so my point still stands.
