once a UK darling with hits like Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh), Kiss the Stars, Gravity, Cry Me Out and a handful of moderate hits under her belt, Pixie had a similar vibe career wise as Dua, who also broke out right out the gate with a handful of hit singles in the UK, then slowly conquering other markets.

 

with push platforms such as MTV Push (very relevant at the time) and other platforms… What stopped Pixie from having a career similar to Dua’s? was it down to single choices? Pixie released quite a lot of ballads during her run.

AAT alone clears Dua I fear. I love some Dua tracks, but it's not close. Dua is lucky she came up in the modern era where there's like 5 people making music because it's so unprofitable now.

Crowded place at the time. Dua is high quality and charismatic but it helps a bit that she's almost the only one doing what she does right now.

Pixie could do New Rules but Dua couldn't do Turn It Up

Pixie's music was always borderline panned which probably prevented her from having worldwide 'ambitions', maybe debuting in the poptimism era would've benefitted her.

Well, I think the problem with Pixie was, that she started to release mediocre dance songs in 2012, like everybody else. She should have stick to pop with retro vibes like Mama Do or Boys & Girls.

Pixie just quit releasing good music after her debut, which is a shame since her debut was such a strong album. 

Pixie debuted pre-poptimism. I remember a lot of her songs (such as Kiss The Stars) were highly panned, often time unnecessarily and that ruined any chance she had of having a serious long-lasting career.

 

Dua was saved by her post-poptimism debut + the fact that at the beginning of her career she was marketed almost as an indie-pop act, kind of like Foxes, rather than a conventional pop star. That gave her much more credibility from the get-go.
