IMO Miley smashing with Flowers was largely due to the amount of goodwill she fostered years prior through releasing a quality song like Midnight Sky and a well-liked album like Plastic Hearts, along with a very successful new look (the 80s new wave mullet was a stroke of genius). I personally wouldn't even call that a comeback, rather a level-up. That's what Katy needs to do now right now, she was doing exactly that with NRO and the 70s aesthetic but got completely derailed. 

 

The only way forward for Katy IMO is to hone in on the more laidback, mellow sound of songs like Harleys, Tsunami or her amazing unreleased song Spend The Night. That's the only way she can let her underrated voice for pop music do its thing while showcasing artistic growth and newfound ambition, especially if she dials back to a more sophisticated look like she had during the TOTGA era for instance.

If she writes a Russel brand inspired track I can see it getting the flowers treatment 

I feel like there’s going to be a 2010s renaissance within this year/next.

 

It would be the perfect time for Katy to strike on that momentum and have a successful comeback. 

The only thing I can see tbh is if she does a feature with another artist in the future, that’s not her song like “_____ ft Katy Perry” she can probably get a hit

I don't think so. I guess you never know, but if anything I'd expect one of her older songs to randomly get popular and start smashing like Hummingbird Heartbeat or something

 

Never Really Over felt like a goodbye kiss to having strong chart success with singles.

She’s great for a throwback.

whatever it sounds like, it'll be interesting to see what her rollout of her lead single looks like.  Remember she used to be the Queen of teaser videos.  And lyric videos.

she can have her "Flowers" moment but I doubt another successful era/album sales 

idk pop girls are kinda having a resurgence now, I think the cards are in her favour.

So basically you're implying that Miley knew how to use a gimmick to sell her album single? And I guess you know the future to assume that Katy couldn't come up with one herself to drive more GP interest? Even though she already has nostalgia and a strong history as an iconic bonafide hitmaker on her side?

in Katy's case, it's mostly the music is just lacking in terms of quality and she hasn't evolved at all

The fume downvotes on this  You're absolutely correct, the GP has not been invested in Katy's personal life since her relationship with Russell Brand. Even her pregnancy wasn't much of a headline.

 

She's already tried using her personal life as an angle for a hit song (Daisies) and it just didn't work.

It would be cool to see her succeed without the help of Ariana Grande or Bradley Cooper 

She would have to make a very good song but since this is Katy we’re talking about that would be a VERY hard thing for her to do. NRO was a hit because it was actually good but that was after attempting that like a dozen times with constant flop after flop. This will be her final chance to make a comeback but I honestly think she’s just better off trying to make something that can land her critical acclaim or something like cause Katy and commercial success at this point just ain’t clicking. Miley had a comeback being a relevant celebrity still, Katy is far from that.

Sis that may be how you see it but some people would say the same things about quality or the lack thereof when it comes to Miley’s music in the last few years too. 

Myself (and a few others in this thread) were simply using Flowers as a recent example of unanticipated success. Of which, should be a reminder to us all, that we shouldn’t count out any of the MPG’s whether they’ve had a bad era(s) or not. As long as they haven’t done anything truly worthy of cancellation, there is always a chance that they may see a better day.
 

Miley is my most played artist of 2023. I must admit that I’m a little surprised that some of you have so little grace or optimism for Katy. Acting like she is some random off of the street, that didn’t get 5 #1 singles in one era alone. Considering that I’m sure you wouldn’t/didn’t enjoy when people counted Miley out either at some point. Label drama or not.
