Hey. As we know, 2:30 is the standard now but various popular tracks are less than 2 minutes now. 

 

Do you think music will become shorter next year in order to further appeal to to viral tik tok trends? 

I'm assuming it will every year from here on out in terms of popular tracks. Attention spans are only getting shorter.

I don't think the music industry can stoop lower than this... but the new Nicki album had a 1:35 length track and it wasn't an outro or an interlude or a skit. We are in the goddamn trenches atp. 

if we allow more “artists” to blow up on tik tok then expect 1:25 length songs.

I think it’s funny how everyone keeps complaint about song legnths when in the past songs were shorter. Most iconic Motown records songs around that time were about 2:30. They were able to fit an entire master piece in that time 

 

Im glad songs are shorter. I couldn’t stand long ass 2015 songs that were like 5 minutes a damn song. Hell justin Timberlake had a 11 minute double song.

They have literally cut out bridges in songs. You can’t be actually happy with that. 
 

For a long time we found equilibrium with around 3:30/4 mins. Let’s not pretend that’s too long for a song. 

I think a 2:30 minute song can be good and feel like a complete song if it's written like one. When it's just verse chorus verse chorus end it only feels half done. 

I think in the past when songs were shorter they were written like full songs, they weren't written to have 20 seconds go viral on TikTok. 

It's pretty bad when for example the Jonas Brothers released the 1:58 Wings as the LEAD from their last album. You can't tell me thy couldn't have added SOMETHING to that track to give it even another 20 seconds. 

No but more and more songs will consist of like catchy 40-50 seconds snippets on loop (x3), just look at Lovin On Me.

What people fail to realize about the whole "songs back in the day were short too" thing is that back then, artists released albums either every year or even twice a year (and therefore provided more music). While that occasionally happens nowadays, it is nowhere near the norm.

I hate it. we should be forcing the short attention span girls to step it up and pay attention. Not enable their mess. Listen, I’d never claim to have the best attention span ever, but I damn sure I can handle a song that’s 3:30-4:30 with a nice bridge and a fully realized structure! If that’s too hard for someone, they gotta work on that, lol. I don’t start wishing a song was over until over the 5 minute mark. 
 

Tell me why Gen Z and below can’t handle a 3 minute sing but can handle a 10 minute version of All Too Well (don’t come for me Swifties I love ATW it’s a joke)

It's kinda hard for me to listen to 5 min songs from the 2000s because most of them were horrible. You can clearly see they were trying to make then longer even if there wasn't much content.

I also look at it different as a writer and producer. I would rather a song be shorter and have chorus and verse but skip things like a pre chorus and a bridge than it to have them and it not be good.
 

A lot of time when making songs in the past people would just make a template and include extra parts to keep it at 3:30 to 4 minutes that didn’t need to be there. that’s what caused the god awful edm breaks in the past. If u take out the breaks then it is about 2:30. I would rather a shorter song than  two bloated pre chorus that adds nothing or a a long 8 to 16 bar chorus.  Honestly most songs don’t really need bridges. A bridge is a nice add on to a song but a good song should hold up without one. Especially once you know how to make a good bridge it becomes repetitive making them structurally. It becomes almost a chore to make one. I really don’t enjoy most bridges cause they mostly structured the same and predictable

I've noticed this too, some older songs are actually WAY too long and you can tell that some artists went in the studio with a "longer = better" mindset.

 

Personally I prefer that sweet spot of 3:00 - 3:15 because those songs are usually concise but still have a bridge and proper structure.

I don’t understand why people blame Tik Tok for this when usually only a 20-30 second snippet of a song goes viral any way. Plenty of long songs like Enchanted or Lana Del Rey songs have been viral on Tik Tok. 
 

Many artists still release long songs as well, I like having the variety of short and long songs. There are some songs 1-2 minutes long that are great and don’t overstay their welcome. Not very song needs the same structure with a bridge by default.
