Back in 2000s, Britney lowkey succeeded the powerhouse vocalist generation of 1990s, such as Whitney, Mariah, and Celine, with her easy pop, R&B/Dance Pop fusion, selling sex, and being followed by many after. The trends breed many successful artists too, extending her impact til the music shifts in early-mid 2010s when Taylor kinda popularized the fun singer-songwriter thing

 

In my fair opinion, she has become the face of this genre, some sort of Pop which meshed to singer-songwriter aesthetic, with country, folk, indie-pop influence, which created landscape for many female artists with similar influence

And just like every trend, everything will slowly fade, and from what we saw from the previous trend shifts, they will be the opposite of the past one

I feel like the succession throne of popgirls shouldn't fall on Taylor, but rather the Dua's, Rihanna's and Ariana's. 

 

Hear me out, Britney, Bey and Xtina came after the larger than life vocalists, and Gaga, Katy's, the Rih's, Ari's, etc. the hitmaking popgirls who dipped and dabbled in almost every pop sound possible. 

 

The question shouldn't be 'what will succeed Taylor?' but rather 'what will succeed the Rihanna/Dua/Ariana brand of pop music'.

 

Taylor is a pure anomaly in the popstar package life cycle. Even Bey was not immune to the effects of ageism and radio refusing to play her over time so she had to pivot her career and image. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift in 2023 is operating like a popstar in her prime, like she just debuted late 2020 and is hitting the ground running faster than everyone when in reality she's a mid 2000s country artist. 

 

We've never seen a popstar of her ilk ever. A popstar who spent a significant part of her already massive career, specifically 7 years, in a completely different genre (country) only to pivot purely to pop and find massive success there and maintain that for more than a decade. For comparison, Madonna hit the ground running a year into her debut by 1983 but even then she started faltering by 1990 post Immaculate Collection, it wasn't until RoL, Music, etc. that she was nearing the apex of her career once again but even then at that point Britney, Xtina, etc. were running circles around her commercially. Mariah lasted a whole decade, came back massively 5 years later and plummeted slowly but surely by the time of the 2010s, 17-20 years into her career. Whitney hardly lasted a decade at the top. Janet was big but there were probably 1 or 2 popgirls at her level constantly throughout her career up til All For You. Beyonce, whether 1997 is her debut or 2003, still doesn't compare. Bey was only really the top dog during her debut solo record but with her succeeding records there have always been other popgirls on par/above her. Gaga-Katy-Rih-Adele by the late 00s-early 10s, Taylor-Rih-Ari during the mid-late 10s, and now SZA, Olivia, Taylor once again are all above her.

 

Meanwhile Taylor was the top dog in 2008, then again globally from 2014-2015, then flash forward to 2020-now, she's still at the apex of the popstar hierarchy. Its quite literally unprecedented. No male or female artist is above her culturally or commercially. And she's in her 17th year of mainstream breakout. She was already mainstream before Just Dance even charted on the Hot 100 and when Hannah Montana was literally still smashing on television.
