Let's discuss the music on Guts

Featured Replies

No chart talk/discussion please, music not the bling :giraffe:

Now that we have all spent a few days with Guts, what are your thoughts on it. Have you listened to it yet? Is it what you expected based on the singles and the artwork? Did she surprise you positively or disappoint you? Will you be tuning in for OR3?

Personally I love BIR? and Love is Embarrassing, which are 2 different but fantastic pop songs. BIR gives Bad Liar vibes kinda. The ballads, especially lacy and logical are good too. All-American ***** is a fun intro. I hope she keeps exploring some new producers for her next album, and although she loves her rock influences, I'd be perched for a pure pop album by her tbh

I gave it a chance and its nothing spectacular.

Doja will release the best album of the year in a week anyway!

It’s all pretty great my favorites are:

All American Bit h

Bad Idea Right

Lacy

Logical

Get Him Back

Love is Embarrassing

Pretty isn’t Pretty

I want to be into her music but it just does not click for me. I still find this last album better than her first so there is hope for the future if she decides to explore other genres. Pop rock is not my favourite genre but if that's what she wants to do, good for her and everyone who enjoys it.

GUTS > SOUR, but both are very good.

My favorites from GUTS are (so far):

-All-American B

-Bad Idea Right?

-Vampire

-Lacy

-Making the Bed

-Get Him Back!

-Pretty Isn't Pretty

I like it

there are some meh ballads on there (and some parts of GHB!, kind of ruin the song)

but overall, the album has some pretty good songs...Teenage Dream is a sleeping gem (her own HTE)

I feel like it edges out Sour? but I havent gotten fully immersed in it

and I would be down to tune in for OR3...just hope she changes her sound a bit? She should evolve her style more (altho it's very hard at her moment. it depends on how she feels, how her career is doing, what her fans would want etc...I feel for her)

I like her rockier songs tho -

All-American Betch

Ballad of a homeschooled girl

Love is embarrassing

Teenage Dream's 2nd part omg

Bad Idea right? and Vampire are also pretty dope.

but I feel I like singles more because of the video effects(+memes), so I leave them out

The production/music is good, thanks to her producer who has also worked for Sky Ferreira on Night Time, My Time. Olivia is a decent singer, I don’t really care for her lyrics but she brings a lot of personality.

I really like it. It's a great soundtrack and I LOVE singing along to some of the songs when im on my bike.

But I don't see myself still playing the album in 5-6 years.

What the album def proved is that Olivia is an amazing songwriter and Sour wasn't just a one-trick pony

Oh wow, this would explain why I loved some of the instrumentals/production so much.

Great evolution, many pop rock bangers, ballads can be hit or miss, but Lacy is downright beautiful folk-pop. She really grown into herself this time around. Plenty of great alt-rock references and I’m happy she broke from her broken hearted girl persona from SOUR to an actual witty and complex lyrical persona with a kaleidoscope of feelings. She’s broken, messy, lovely, petty, victim, victimizer, sarcastic, earnest, honest, oversincere, etc I like her attitude for a 19 kid. This is way better than SOUR, although it won’t touch its numbers. I suspect it will linger for audiences though. She justified her place in pop music. I think she has the potential to change things up and even move beyond pop/rock, because her taste is quite omnivorous and all over the place as a listener. We will see, we’re perched.

I've liked BIR, Vampire, lacy, logical and making the bed

I don't really use the rest, I don't think it'll have much replay value for me

It’s actually really good. I thought I’d dislike the ballads (logical, the grudge, making the bed) because I thought SOUR’s ballads were kinda dreary and boring, but they’re all catchy.

Those are excellent choices, they're pretty much my favorites too. Although even Vampire is joining them lately tbh

It's a big improvement from sour (which was also good), it has 0 skips

the improvement makes me so excited for OR3 to see how she's gonna improve more as she becomes older and the genres/styles she's gonna explore

my favorite song is probably love is embarrassing
