I hate track vs track comparisons. It really says nothing about the quality of an album overall

People are gonna disagree but I think Tunnel has all the strengths NFR has but elevates them even more. NFR is an easier listen, but Tunnel is a journey and for that I lean towards it.

I tried doing the track-by-track comparison and ended up choosing both each time 

 

NFR! is her magnum opus, but I really believe there's an argument to be made that Ocean Blvd is her best album and yet another opus from her in my opinion. I'll need to sit with it for at least a year but it's definitely up there (with Ultraviolence as well). It is much more complex and harder to engage with than Norman.

 

All I know for now is that Fingertips, Kintsugi, A&W, Paris TX, and Grandfather are all 11/10s and there isn't a single skip on the record.

I need to give myself some more time to come back to The Grants, DYK, and Margaret tbh. Candy Necklace is just like, there for me though I love the piano in it some of the lyricism I don't really get much out of.

I can't even be mad at the Kintsugi snubbery, Love Song has always been that girl for me

It can't just me be, and I love Cinnamon Gurl, it brings the drama, but it's a tad bit overrated imo. Obsessed back in 2019, but it's probably one of the NFR songs I go back to the least.

i like kintsugi but find the line "There's a name for it in Japanese, it's kintsugi" so cringe 

and ye even tho i love fingertips, cinnamon is just SOOO beautiful, as soon as she starts the song and that melancholic piano hits with the "cinnamon" oooh shes taking it

I honestly still can't understand how so many people can enjoy NFR THAT much. Yes, the highlights are there but most of it feels so bland and tired. DYK is full of excitement and life.

The title track and The Grants were pretty instant for me tbh. I ascend every time I get hit by the glorious orchestra + gospel choir. You neeeed to give them more time.  Margaret was a massive grower too. It's such a sweet and pure song.

 

There's something very unsettling/mysterious about Candy Necklace that I really love. A Lana-doing-jazz moment can never go wrong for me and the melodies are really strong. Also, I think its placement on the album (following A&W and right before Kintsugi/Fingertips) is perfect. I take it with the Jon Batiste Interlude as one ~7mins song. It just adds to the sinister and haunting atmosphere.  Lyrically, I saw it as a metaphor for a guy/relationship but after the video, I can see it being about her relationship with fame and its toxicity. Mainly the second verse.
