There was only one song I really liked from her, "I Won't." She was way too plain, otherwise, with nothing at all interesting to say or do.

Taylor replaced a lot of acoustic singer-songwriters, of all sexes, when Speak Now came out.

I absolutely loved her first two albums 

Deep down she was pretty much a one trick pony and those barely last, but she also faced issue with the death of Adult Contemporary during the 2010s. She was a big name for the format and when the popularity waned she wasn’t able to break into the pop music of the time. Sara Bareilles would have faced the same fate had she not pushed Brave on mainstream radio after the Roar controversy. Sara was also smart to move to Broadway and write behind the scenes. Colbie is good though, she’s a nepobaby. Her father used to produce major Fleetwood Mac albums. 
 

A lot of the soundtrack girls were done around the same time. Their stuff used to feature all the time on RomComs and TV series. Girls like Ingrid Michaelson, Anna Nalick, A Fine Frenzy, KT Tunstall, etc They needed the AC Format. Surprisingly their known songs are well streamed these days just like Colbie’s. Others are cult famous like Brandi Carlile and Regina Spektor

 

 

 

Try was a decent AC hit for her in 2014 so it’s not like she fell into obscurity after 2009…

I don’t think there is anything particularly interesting or shocking about her trajectory. She had a strong debut and saw steady falloff with each subsequent album. That’s how most artists careers play out.

The music scene changed and she had problems with her label. Today, she's a country artist.

 

She’s an adult-contemporary singer-songwriter type. She didn’t have the mainstream relevance of a pop-star, or a place within a certain subculture that hip-hop artists or country artists have. 
 

Much like Sara Bareilles, Christina Perri, and Ingrid Michaelson she has some cute hits that the public is definitely aware of, but it’s not like she was a big brand. 

She won album of the year for being a feature on Taylor Swift’s Fearless. She was never constantly talked about. Bubbly was massive but singer songwriter adult contemporary type stars like her rarely get more than one hit. If anything it’s impressive how long she lasted

I don’t think she was meant to have a breakthrough so she is very lucky. Her music is good but very much runs in the same vine with the best quality delivered in the beginning of her career, no wonder she vanished then....

She's way too vanilla plus she makes a song of a certain sound that is niche. She's never meant to be a big artist aside from a big hit or two.

I was about to say

"Try" was ahead of its time, but "Bubbly" is a timeless classic

Not you butchering her best single Fallin‘ For You like that .

 

Colbie was my first fave before Kesha and I still have a very soft spot for her. In my opinion, the primary mistakes were the unnecessary Christmas album nobody asked for and then Gypsy Heart.

 

She tried way too hard to pander to mainstream pop with Gypsy Heart (most notably evidenced by its Ryan Tedder-produced lead single that completely failed to take off) and the album as a whole felt too try-hard and bland compared to her previous albums. After that, she went independent, which was like the final nail in the coffin for her in terms of success.

 

I do believe that she could have remained somewhat successful if the Christmas album had never happened and she had released an album that would have been more in the vein of Breakthrough/All Of You instead of a mainstream-pandering attempt like Gypsy Heart.
