Not really. Back then, you usually would have to build up a local fanbase through touring and performing, or be someone who worked behind the scenes in the industry (writer/background singer/producer) with provable talent before you got a record deal. The label would then develop and "debut" you on a mass scale, but you usually already had a fanbase.  Artists who were "discovered" behind the scenes, were seen as manufactured, like a boy band.  

 

Ice Spice actually isn't a plant, she went viral multiple times before she was "put on" by the industry. It just happened really fast.  Doja is more of a plant. Even after Moo! went viral, she was all over the radio with no real hits thanks to Dr. Luke.

Absolutely not true. There were many artists, especially Black artists, who were discovered through church or they were introduced to someone in the industry. Most artists didn’t have fanbases prior to debuting.

Doesn’t “plant” just mean an artist managed by a major label with a big promo budget? If so, then that applies to most pop acts and all our faves.
