Those are the greats and legendary artists and to even suggest that Taylor Swift surpassed them is insane .. I mean MJ career spanned from 1964/2009 thats 45 yrs and Madge just celebrated her 40th anniversary this yr!

Taylor Swift's sales and streams might be falsely inflated, but she's at least as popular as any of her peers and all of them have been at the top of the industry for 1-2 DECADES at this point. If the main ATRL girlies aren't legends then there's less than 5 "legends" ever and Michael Jackson is the only pop star in that category. 

To be fair to Taylor she's not the only one all of the major labels do it ??‍♂️so I won't get on her for that when its her label thats doing it.

You have to be living in delusion. Many wouldn't have said she had legend status before Midnights but after a second imperial album clearly in retrospect she will be viewed as a legend.

When I was growing up in the 90s (I hate to be that person) Aretha, Diana, Patti, Stevie Wonder, The Rollingstones  etc wasn't my era and we still respected them and revered them as The greats that they are and The kids today don't do that and they dont have that same respect as we did unfortunately.

Most reasonable people don't believe Taylor or Beyoncé are legends the way the artists you mentioned are perceived today - not yet - but they're steadily building their name in the upper echelons. Of course random people are more likely to say older names rather than new ones - firstly because of the inherent bias against everything current, and secondly because you can't compare 15+ year careers to artists who have been around for 40 years or more.

 

Not to mention many of these veterans had periods where they were widely mocked and their contributions discredited. From Elvis' Hollywood era and his infamous final years to Michael Jackson becoming a pop culture joke throughout the mid-90s and 2000s until his death, or Madonna being dismissed as someone who opted for cheap shock-value over artistry. It's part of the cycle for every music legend, sometimes brought by the artists themselves (see Michael and currently Kanye West) but other times due to whichever narrative the media wants to push - often driven by factors like misogyny.

 

Consider this: when somebody starts becoming a celebrity among celebrities, often cited as influence by newcomers - which start getting attention thanks to these comparisons (see Olivia Rodrigo and Normani + Chloe), and whose catalogue only gets more and more prestige with time - with said artists being more than 15 years in the game, it's clear they're something special. Just my take on all this ?
