Is Promo useless these days?

Featured Replies

ATRL often likes to use excessive promo/lack of promo as an excuse why their favorite artist didn’t smash. But is promo really still relevant these days?

TV shows are mostly irrelevant, and while TTH promo is helpful, we’ve seen plenty of artists debut at #1 on TTH and still flop badly. It seems like in the streaming era, people will truly just listen to the songs they actually want to hear. Do you agree?

Depends on what you define promo. We only see the things on the surface (TV performances, radio deal, TTH!!!!!!) but labels could spend millions or not on billboards, TV commercials, partnerships, TikTok ads and so on...

Truth is, no major album release could be launched without an elaborate marketing plan.

performances haven't had as big of a result for a long time now

I mean..they do, but only in certain cases

Meh. This logic doesn’t hold. In previous eras tons of artists had a full promo schedule (talk shows, radio interviews, award shows) and bombed. That didn’t mean it wasn’t an effective promotional tool. TTH impact is overrated but it is still a valuable promo spot.

Traditional promo is over in 2022. You don’t need to leave your house to score a smash era anymore. Just ensure you got a playlist push, radio payola, and social media campaign (especially TikTok) and that’s all you need. You might not smash, but in that case there’s nothing else you could’ve done to smash. GP just didn’t connect with your song, an Ellen performance, that literally nobody watches, wouldn’t change that.

Absolutely NOT. A good performance can get millions of views on YT. Also people do respect good performer and live vocals. Not everyone has a legion of sheep fans that will buy any trash they release. Which we have seen a lot of this year. :michael:

Useless promo: TV shows like Ellen, Fallon, etc., Billboards on Times Square, Spotify playlist covers

Useful promo: Awards shows, TTH, radio deals, ads on youtube and especially TikTok, pay big tiktokers to use your song

You need everything. Camila's Bam Bam had the Spotify push & late night live performances. But it didn't have radio & so it couldn't crack the top 20.

Absolutely not.

Even if performances, talk shows, interviews and so aren’t watched live, clips from it will be shared and watched by millions on social media afterwards.

If you're already carried by streaming it is. If you're not, it isn't.

Traditional promo is not completely useless, it can really benefit some artists, like Dua, she really proved and shown her growth and her Grammys performance did 10 million in a day, which is kinda huge.

no, it just looks different nowadays. it's supposed to be more 'spontaneous' & viral relatable clips rather than planned and calculated late night talk show performances (obviously the spontaneity is just as calculated as old school promo though). you still have to get yourself in front of people to be successful.

Promo in the way that it’s talked about here has been irrelevant for over a decade now.

If people want to hear your music all you need to do is make a post on TikTok/IG/Twitter and a notification from Spotify/Apple. That’s it. You’re set. Drake has done this for a decade and he’s the biggest artist out there. Obviously the Atrl girlies just need excuses for why their faves are irrelevant/flopping.

Absolutely not. There's a reason why Future Nostalgia and After Hours were two of the best performing albums of recent years. Appearances, performances, music videos, interviews still have a significant impact.

I think social media and streaming are necessary, in terms of live performance, I think it helps to showcase the artist can handle a crowd and therefore can tour.
