Why is every generation obsessed with the 80s..?

Featured Replies

Millennials era: The Fame Monster, the Last Friday Night video, the 80s inspired synth/electro-pop wave of the late 2000s, etc.

Gen Z era: Midnights, Stranger Things, It remake, After Hours, Future Nostalgia, the Take On Me copies, etc.

What's so special about the 80s?

Tbh 80s pop culture itself (fashion, music, movies, etc.) was cheesy, corny, goofy in a bad way when you actually look at footage of those days, everyone looked awful

Millennials in the late 2000s and Gen Z today just make it look better than it actually was through a romanticized throwback version

The 60s and the 90s >>>>>

music was constantly evolving up until the 80s, then it went slowly but surely down from there

MJ, Queen, Madonna, Janet, Prince, Whitney are enough of a reason to me ?‍♀️

Those are the worst decades imo

OT:

I mean The Fame Monster was inspired by the 90s as opposed to The Fame which was inspired by the 80s. We also have a lot of artists inspired by the 70s and even 00s and it’s not uncommon for even earlier decades to serve as inspiration for artists in mainstream (Material Girl mv, Back To Basics era). I just think there’s a lot more 80s media to draw inspiration from than from a lot of other eras but in the end every past era has always served as influence for the current pop culture.

i just immediately think of hot guys with mullets and earrings so i think that plays into it

(and also my fav Miss Bush’s entire existence/ethos)

Idk but the 80s is so reductive at this point. Everyone's like "tHe 80s aRe bAcK!!!!!>!>!>" the 80s has literally been back on and off for the past 10 years.

TFM was inspired by the 80s?

Monster and Dance in the Dark are 80s Europop inspired tracks

Because it was the first True decade of Modernization. Globalization of Pop Culture was finally possible due to technology and Broadcasting. There were major Pop Stars in the 70’s and 60’s but they were mainly bands or local to thier countries. With MTV and Madonna/MJ stepping on the scene is when the shift changed. Ever since nostalgia of the 80’s is heightened due to the people who grew up when this explosion of MTV happen.

80s dramatically changed pop culture + aesthetics from that decade is well liked.
