she debuted right when cancel culture entered the mainstream and was one of its first casualties.

When you're a rapper and you have memes going viral of you sounding silly it's done for, Rap music is all about being cool and when someone has something like that going around of them it's BAD for them, never mind that every other rapper sounded like that on stage too people just really had it out for her. Also, she had a very small fanbase supporting her career at that point and with the GP dropping her like that her fanbase became her only market. That repackaging of releasing her second album with 4,5 songs was a huge misstep as well, like how did you expect to sell an album of songs that people already had with only a few new ones?

Iggy was never meant to last. If anything, she was lucky to be able to get a few more cute hits and avoid the one hit wonder curse.

gay hate drag/queer queen she regularly put on interview/MV. she is too real

refuse to support child slave circuit and got punished by industry. prompt to her standing on right side of history.

people cancelled her because of her racist past and her blaccent

Some of these replies already.... 5I5s8.png

OT:

- The argument with Azealia

- The slavemaster line

- The blaccent

- Sexism / misogyny

A big emphasis on the last point too because you have white male rappers who have done or said just as much problematic stuff as Iggy, yet some of their careers are still thriving. Eminem is already established but even he had a song back in the day where he said something along the lines of "don't date Black girls, they only want your money" and he wasn't cancelled.

Azealia Banks coined "Igloo Australia" and did that Hot 97 interview and it was over for her after that:ghostface:

I mean she still got moderate hits like Kream and whatever Sally Walker

Right? There's like only one Iggy stan here and they don't even show up to the single Iggy thread that was not made by them?

I swear, I think this video was a HUGE factor. As someone said, this was absolutely an “Emperor With No Clothes On” reveal, and she was just too new with too many questionable tension-inducing-aspects about her (what everyone is naming: the blaccent, etc etc) —- that, when you see this? She’s done.

This video is still the FIRST thing to come to mind when I think of Iggy Azalea. And I liked her well enough, and bought The New Classic.

I take umbrage with all the "talent!!" comments because the implication is that all rappers are inherently talented and talent is what gets you to succeed.

This isn't... true. I'm not even interested in a "here are rappers less talented than Iggy" because that has no productive use, but my overall point is that talent isn't the single factor y'all think it is - across all entertainment, plenty of immensely talented people haven't ever made a blip, and plenty of talentless people have had longevity in their careers.

The hip-hop audience screaming "X is so talentless" will also just bump someone like, Lil Pump "for the lulz".  Recall that the "talentless mumble rapper" backlash only happened YEARS after that sound passed.

The actual answer is a combination of a) that disastrous freestyle video b) her beefs and ignorance about the racial dynamics that have always underscored the field she loves, and c) the thick accent.

Cancel culture, plus that viral video of her rapping really tarnished her credibility.

She came back strong with Sally Walker, Started & Kream though, but she wasn't backed up by a label at that time so she wasn't going to reach the same status as an independent artist.

Lil Pump fell off years ago, he was a fad

Being a talentless white girl pretending to be a rapper and even getting acclaimed by being nominated for a Grammy pissed the world

she was never going to last
