Do U Think The Recording Academy Is Racist...

Featured Replies

Or at the very least racially bias when it comes to artists of color?

I mean in the 64 yrs of The Grammy's only 11 times has a Black artist walked away with music highest honor (AOTY) and really its only 9 considering Stevie Wonder won 3xx back in (1973, 74 & 76)

Idk any other way to slice it ??‍♂️if it looks like a duck, quack like a duck got damnit its a F'n duck ?

Black artists are the biggest contributors to music, we set the trends, we created modern music as we all know it today (Rock, Jazz, Country, POP POP POP, Rock & Roll, Blues, R&B, Hip Hop/Rap, Dance, Disco etc etc etc and yet we're always thrown into The R&B or Hip-Hop categories and I don't think its done by accident.

Not taking anything from say Adele or Sam Smith but they'll award them for essentially making R&B music but won't actually award The Black artist thats making the same kind of music and doing it better too.   I bought 21 & 25 and I like Adele so its not shade to her but its just something I have noticed within the industry.

What do U guys think?

Very much so. Less than mediocre white acts such as Adele winning so much is proof of that.

Has it been racist at some point during the 64 years? Absolutely. But I don't think it is currently. And I'm not gonna throw a queer person under the bus for gaining recognition

Just wanted to make sure I'm not crazy ?

I mean out of 64 only 11 wins is bad but I think other minorities haven't really won either like how many Asian and Middle Eastern winners have there been too?

no, beyonce wins awards every year

Yea in the R&B field (which further proves my point) but I'm talking about the general field category .. I thought that was clear? ??‍♂️

I'm not throwing anyone under the bus I'm just speaking on something I noticed.

It seems they like R&B and Hip Hop they just don't want it from us Black people but will turn around and award the watered down version ??‍♂️

no, big 4 is just an award and there are plenty of poc won in general field including earlier this year. high competition on its own prestigious.

I mean aren't the grammys a sham anyway why do we even care about them

Nope. I think alot of "snubs" are justified and alot of are not justified and there are many examples of bad decisions made across the board.

What does the most recent AOTY recipient indicate?

Why do many minorities have 5+ grammy wins? Why are multiple (5) minorities collecting 20+ wins?

Two minorities hold the top wins as a producer.

Eight minorities have won 6-9 grammys in one night.

I think there are many acts across the boards that can argue about snubs and many can celebrate wins.

:clap3:

Yes they are at some point but I don’t think that much anymore like they once were. We need more black artist to be diverse in music though. A lot of the most popular black artist these days are mostly rap/hip-pop and R&B with some pop here and there. We need more black folks in mainstream music doing rock/alternative, edm, metal, classical etc.

Beyoncé for example doesn’t win album of year because she has too many writers in her albums and i guess the academy sees that she gets too much help despite the quality of her music.

I know atrl doesn’t like her much but I think HER gets a lot recognition because the academy sees her as different from other black artist who fit the typical rap/hip-pop/R&B mold.

Because many amazingly talented minority acts have proven they value the grammy's oscars, emmys way more than other awards specifically to celebrate the culture.

From Latin Grammy's to NAACP awards to other awards. More celebs should value awards laser focused on supporting their culture at the same level if not higher than the general big 4 EGOT. People want "validation" and "acceptance"...sad.

And fans follow suit and brag about their faves awards until they get snubbed then the award show is fake and rigged or whatever:zzz:

Yeah most of my faves haven't won any big awards and I really couldn't care

I mean there can only be one winner per category and it won't always be the person we think deserves it.

You can try going through the nominations and picking your objective winners but you will see that some years there's more than one monumental album that deserves it and the vote is bound to split between them.

For example in 2018, I remember Bruno's AOTY win was controversial but it did not go to a white artist. Another time Adele's 21 was going against Loud and Born This Way and out of those 3 21 was the obvious choice.

There were definitely cases where black people were robbed, I think Janelle or Cardi should have won the 2019 AOTY and that was a big year that probably split a lot of votes but other than that it really depends on who's competing and the impact those albums had.

Adele already acknowledged that her 25 win should have gone to Lemonade, but at least it didn't go to a Justin Bieber album.

Overall there has been a shift over the past decade or so and there are more black artists in the categories, more types of albums included so the Grammys are addressing their shortcomings.

It's weird cause it's true in that category but look at how many awards beyonce and kanye have

True.

However Asians or Middle Easterns aren't big contributors to music like Black people are tho nor do they set trends that everyone else follows and they wasn't involved in the creation of modern music .. Thats all Black people

When first established? Yes. Then they were more-so culturally ignorant, and out of touch with what was actually impactful or boundary-pushing among certain genres, but haven’t they had an overhaul to attempt to address this recently?

Ultimately, it’s an institution ripe for corruption, like any other. They hold manufactured significance as an accolade, but I don’t place more weight on their selections over actual industry experts & reviewers that consume music for a living. Fantano > the Grammy’s, I said what I said. :coffee2: And we all saw that article that featured these “experts” commenting on their selection for SOTY, if I recall, and it was a complete joke. Any credibility they had should’ve been killed then.

You can’t pay for your award, but committee members can be spoiled and bribed in other ways, like dinners, vacations etc Which opens up a whole can of worms around who has the wealth, privilege and backing to do so.

It seems Grammys goes to the right direction so far this decade, we have H.E.R. with her less commercial song won SOTY meanwhile Jon won AOTY with his underrated unknown album.

Absolutely. It's not a coincidence artists like Beyonce, Kendrick, the Weeknd, Kanye are confined to the rap/R&B categories while artists like Taylor and Adele have multiple AOTY wins. Abel literally stopped submitting for that reason.

Jon winning AOTY

Anderson Paak winning SOTY, ROTY

HER winning SOTY

Childish Gambino sweeping ROTY/SOTY

Bruno swept in 2018.

Yes, and a very clear example has already been mentioned. Leave alone the big awards for a second, why the hell are black artists not routinely winning POP awards? If they can manage to separate race from genre, maybe that will be a sign some actual change has taken place.
