And considering Summer 2020 sucked majorly can you IMAGINE how iconic this would've been? Would've had a whole second wind that year and every summer after

Because her 2010 decade album strategy from Red to Lover was to have an intentionally “bad” pop song to generate ‘controversy’ and garner interest. But then she’d lead up with an album with gems. 
 

Somewhat taking a page out of Madonna’s rule book. 

She thought she’ll have her Can’t Stop the Feeling moment with ME! and a Perfect/Thinking Out Loud moment with Lover(song) but failed miserably. Anyway. Lover (album) is still huge despite those atrocious single choices.

Please no. Madonna's singles were almost always on point and usually the strongest tracks on their parent albums.

Taylor does not care to promote singles just for the sake of scoring hits. She uses most of her single releases as PR moves to push a narrative or shift public perception of her; most of the others are SOTY-bait. It’s one of the reasons why she struggles to score hits, but it’s also one of the reasons she’s so popular and beloved: she uses her singles to promote herself. She is the hit. 
 

Cruel Summer does not have a statement. It’s just a fun pop song, which rendered it pretty useless to her.
