Inspired by the Celine thread.

 

People love to call her one but what is her impact, her influence? She has decent album sales, but most her peers have at least 1 album that is bigger (Kelly, Britney, Avril). 

 

She has a lot of hits, but for most of them she had to rely on remixes and features.

 

Did she come up with a new musical direction? Does she have iconic dances like Moonwalk? Did she start movements with her music, her image? Does she have iconic MVs like Wrecking Ball or Montero? Does she have iconic outfits like Meat Dress or the Jungle Dress? Im afraid its a NO for all of these.

 

With all that, what makes Beyonce a legend? What is her mark on pop culture, what is her artistic identity?

Beyonce is not a legend.

She is not a musician and she is a not a gifted vocalist.

When I think of legend, I think of someone who is a gifted musician who can play musical instruments and write their own songs. Exception is Celine or Whitney who have superb vocals. Beyonce is none of those.

Having  20-30 people to write your song, tired ass shaking dance, can't play musical instruments or mediocre vocal doesn't make you a legend.

 

 

She led Destiny’s Child and maintained success and longevity 20 years after going solo on top of being the highest grossing touring act of her generation (assuming being the highest grossing black artist in history wasn’t enough). And even she failed to get top hits over the last decade, she still managed to outsell/stream the girls (album wise) who actually had said hits for the last decade, managing to sit pretty as one of the top 5 most streamed female artist of the 2010s. Meanwhile her 00s discography is literally the most recurrently streamed female discography of the 00s on Spotify. She’s also the most decorated female artist in history. Like who cares if “insert artist” has had a single solo record with bigger sales than any of Bey’s solo projects if Beyoncé was ultimately the one that was still able to snatch multi-platinum albums long after those specific artists peaked in the 2000s? Most of which immediately proceeded to go on sharp declines who lacked any real touring power. She’s a legend most specifically because of the way she set a new standard as a performer in an era full of run off the mill acts, she continued to push boundaries that were seen as unconventional, polarizing and daring too. She set herself a part on so many levels as a mainstream act and people will remember her for it more than dozens of others…. A lot of you also speak as if you can name more than 3 hits by Donna, Patty or Aretha who are certified legends that go beyond radio fodder.

Just search for her albums and singles on Wikipedia, a bunch of them has a section exclusively dedicated to talk about their impact. Homecoming was credited with increasing insterest in HBCUs, Formation had the entire United States debating over race and police brutality, her Self-titled is literally the reason our faves release on fridays... I can keep doing this all day.

Beyoncé can play piano. And you can only be trolling to say she doesn't have outstanding vocals 

 

going from one of the highest selling girl groups of all time, to smash hit after smash hit with Crazy In Love, to Baby Boy, to Check On It, to Irreplaceable, to Single Ladies, to Halo, to a string of classic albums (4, Beyonce, Lemonade) stirring the cultural conversation for decades, changing the universal release day for music to friday, to the absolute rage of conservatives during the Lemonade, and setting up the greatest show of all time (Homecoming) that drew attention to HBCU's.

 

not to mention her immense talent for singing and writing, idc what yall say she is a proved amazingly talented songwriter and star rated vocalist.
