Touted as rivals, Camila and Dua both have their break out songs around the same time (Havana & New Rules). 

 

However, their careers are currently on opposite trajectories as Dua has been scoring hits after hits while Camila is struggling despite the heavy label push she's been getting. 

 

Why and how did Dua manage to prevail over Camila? Discuss, ATRL.

Dua can actually sing, perform, has a better discography, has a better team behind her, better EVERYTHING

Havana was bigger than New Rules, slightly. However, Dua had a MUCH bigger debut era in comparison to Camila's. Furthermore, the Future Nostalgia era blows Camila's sophomore era out of the water, as the album's only savior is Senorita which has been surpassed by Levitating and even arguably, Don't Start Now. Therefore, Dua has always been ahead of her and hence, outlasted her 

Havana was a fluke, Camila Cabello was always a faceless industry plant who had to rely on $25 makeup worthy bundle with her CDs for a disgustingly cheap price of $3 in order to get cute album peaks but Billboard said NO to fradulence and this is now her real result

Everything about Camila just felt forced and manufactured, you could clearly tell that there's an industry machine that was working overtime in order to make her a star. I guess people just saw through the inauthenticity of it all

Dua's singles are way stronger. More GP interest. Better payola.

she’s still a mediocre performer at best and a bad dancer at worst, she just serves better looks and has more backup dancers to cover it up. meanwhile, camila has stage presence in spades and is one of the best gen z performers i fear

Camila's team is amazing too though, she has great connections, high profile collabs, great great promo slots, amazing playlisting considering her singles:hits ratio. The only mistake they've made multiple times is bad singles choices. 

The music is just better

Dua creates fully realised concepts for her releases (regardless of if you like her music or not, the uniformity and precision her creative direction had in the FN era is impeccable) and manages to make them feel like events with what she releases. She has a cool girl persona, Camila pandered to the Jennifer Lawrence quirky girl routine and ruined the "power couple" duo she could've had with Shawn with appearing so accessible to the public with their antics. Posting videos of you sucking someone's face doesn't have the mystique of a celebrity megastar and her releases are never executed well enough to be artistically unique beyond what's trendy at the moment. She's following trends rather than setting them. Dua is to Camila what Harry is to Shawn imo.

because stage presence doesn’t translate to success these days? because you can’t see an artist’s stage presence while streaming their music? because people rarely watch performances these days and just buy tickets to shows because they like the music and don’t care about the artists’ performance abilities? it’s not that hard to understand. barely any of the biggest artists these days have good performance abilities or stage presence.
