Hmmm I think Navy should give up on the idea of her performing a new single at the SBHTS. She really doesn't need that to smash, and imo its kind of low key desperate to perform a song with low GP awareness and affection on the biggest stage in the world rather than her most loved hits. The show should be a spectacle celebrating her career, not a promo slot.

 

Madonna's GMAYL... well, case in point, it felt desperate and didnt even pay off. Formation on the other hand worked because it was a political statement, but I can't see Rih doing something like that.

 

I mean if she releases a song in the next 6 week and it smashes over December and January, then maybe, sure... but I can't see that happening either.

The Super Bowl is what caused “GMAYL” to peak in the top ten of the Hot 100. It jumped to #1 on iTunes and sold 175K units the week following the performance. 
 

Madonna was 54 at the time.

 

If someone like Rihanna debuted a new song at the HTS, it would explode. 
 

I see your point overall but there’s more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

Of course Rih will smash with the lead whenever she releases - I just don't think she will release until 2023 tbh.

 

And no I don't think Rih is going to do anything super controversial with her performance. The most she will likely do imo is big up her Bajan heritage and mention being an immigrant.

Yeh for sure it had a huge effect - not denying that. My point is Rih definitely doesn't need that. And GMAYL still bombed overall even with the performance which is high key embarrassing... Like rewatching her half time show, most people are going to be like... what is this song?  It's def better to stick to the guaranteed classics.

If she wants to go uber viral she'll open up singing Hero with Mariah Carey. Iconic

I feel like she'll preview new music in some Super Bowl commercial in January - and probably include like 1 minute of her new single during her performance.

 

If she doesn't perform new music at all, the most recent song of her entire set will be 7 years old (at best)  it wouldn't really make sense for a comeback performance after such a long hiatus. I don't know if she'll drop new music before or shortly after - but she'll most likely include a bit of new material in her halftime show.

I think she knows somethings gotta give. Whether she previews it the night of, drop the lead before the show, or R9 drops next year.

I'm personally indifferent if she performs a new song or not, but honestly this is her big return to music, so I do think it'd be lowkey a waste if she takes the stage with no new material. 

 

Madonna's case was a little different because she performed the song for promo to get another hit (when she had so many other classics she could of performed), Rihanna obviously doesn't need to do that, BUT as I said this is her return to music in like over 6 years, so I'm sure people would be expecting something new from her, but ultimately I do agree it doesn't matter if she doesn't perform a new song. 

 

I personally don't care for fan service songs, every era being represented, heck I wouldn't even care if she doesn't performs Umbrella or Diamonds if it doesn't mesh well into the show etc. I think the main thing they should focus on is just delivering a great show with great transitions, production, remixes, dynamic and a setlist that makes sense. Everything else can take the backseat

The daily studio visits should be enough of a hint that she plans to release new music in time for the show

A greatest hits in the streaming era seems ridiculous. When people can get the same songs playlisted, unless she's rerecording some of them.
