i saaaaid normani needs a niche because that's what's gonna keep people around. normani found herself musically in that aaliyah/brandy pocket like you said, so that's why 1:59 doesn't bother me. i prefer an artist with a niche than someone who doesn't know themselves. that's why people are so inconsistent these days.

Really wasn't a big fan of most leaked songs tbh some are good but most of them aren't album material to me apart from like 4 or 5 of them

My speculation about how singles are chosen

I follow K-Pop and an artist just released a song that I think I'll be obsessed with for a while. The thing is, it is the artist's 2nd single.

Now I realize-
I don't know if this is the same idea that Normani's team has, but I think their plan is to release a pretty good song first (1:59) to build momentum (warm us up, I think like WheresJay said)
But you save the BEST content (the Candy Paint's "big sis" song) for LAST to really make impact
