TEOG is tooooo long to ever reliably be a streaming smash. I think its one of her best but even I don't even listen to it that much because its nearly 6 minutes long. If they cared about the streaming numbers, I think putting the radio edit on streaming could help it out some

Applause chorus isn’t melodic, it’s just lots of words jumbled together. Venus would have been a better lead 

Applause literally spent 14 weeks inside the Top 10 I love Venus, but it might be even too polarizing as a lead.

Applause’s job was to become a signature Gaga smash like Just Dance or Bad Romance, and to get people excited for its parent album. It did neither.

Ehh, I don't agree. I think the video we got was because that was exactly Gaga's vision, and she didn't think the original concept suited the song.

There's no song on ARTPOP that would have worked better as a lead single than Applause.

You're right and you should say it, JnD's instrumental is top notch, bummed that DJWS' instrumental breakdown from the iTunes Festival was cut because that was AMAZING

Not really, I don’t see any other song on ARTPOP being radio and GP friendly enough to be the lead single. I guess G.U.Y. or DWUW were the other more radio friendly options, hence them both being chosen as singles but I don’t think either of them made sense as the lead.

If this is the case they needed to pick a different track from the ones recorded because Applause isn’t a signature Gaga hit and it didn’t generate interest in AP overall.

Meh, I actually think Applause did fine. Artpop’s reception probably would have been similar even with a different lead because she had become so polarising and overexposed at that point in time
