I have the slightest feeling that the boost is mostly because of people discovering the song accidentally through Mary on a Cross with its Bloody Mary lyric and it actually being viral.

Chromatica was just an unfortunate era with literally the worst period of release and rollout, it's not really the music the problem (aside from SL).

That's what happens when they release 2 singles for an entire era (same reason Joanne and ARTPOP get embarrassing daily updates). It's so weird to me how Gaga's team seems to care only about peaks, when focusing on longevity is much smarter.

The radio needs to program the **** out of it, or it needs to click with the gp right away or it’s not worth sending out new singles.

It's always worth to try at least 3 or 4 singles, even if they bomb, they always help with the album longevity and overall streams

No matter the critical response we are in a time at the minute where everything is extremely fast paced and disposable, if you’re not getting that huge hit chances are your older songs will be competing with  your recent release. Pop/dance albums by females have more risk involved in some ways, but absolutely need meticulous long term planning and constant attention.

 

E.g. no doubt there will be a thread soon about ARUTW outstreaming BMS (one of the most acclaimed songs this year, case in point). But the album is doing even better than folklore at this point cause of the constant swap change of singles, tiktok, the timing of the industry return to dance - Chromatica actually helped this but it wasn’t in it if that makes sense

Radio discard her pre release singles in America at 12 weeks, so I guess interscope don’t see them getting picked up post album. The singles thing will be an issue moving forward unless this can be changed or she can put out something that really clicks with listeners beyond the HAC format. I think she could do it if Nicki/Britney can, but in general USA is a bad market for her

It’s not just about radio though. 911 got a video and 1 live performance and wasn’t even a proper single and it’s still miles ahead of the other album tracks on Spotify.

So many songs from Chromatica would’ve fit right into UK radio. Alice, Free Woman (French Radio Version) and Sour Candy were begging to be spammed on radio in summer 2020. Alice was even Top 30 on album release and there was multiple more Top 40 if they weren’t ineligible because of the chart rules.

 

I’ve went off on a tangent but I’ll never get over the era not reaching it’s full potential in the UK cause this album was our favourite sound and she probably won’t do it again for a while.

In from the UK too I think Mainland Europe getting the 911 airwaves push was probably cause ROM had underperformed there on airways especially compared to Stupid Love (funnily enough). ROM was played here in heavy rotation beyond Chromatica leaving the chart at 21/22 weeks

 

They planned for the fast paced nature for its life cycle, (SL—->ROM in only a month) so having no MV for SC and TTH/Radio alone for ROM was clearly never going to sell to potential from their POV. They did give up, and I do believe Gaga herself didn’t want to look insensitive at the actual time.
