For a few years now, stans of veteran acts like Gaga, Katy, Lana, etcetera have pointed to their streaming growth as a sign of their continued relevance — but that "growth" for most of these older acts has primarily been centered on the older part of their discography from their peak, which is important but is more a sign of people going back to what they love most about them rather than their current standing in music increasing. We've seen this directly with deep cuts from Gaga's 10+ year old albums going semi or full blown viral on TikTok and the resulting streaming boost these songs enjoy. Queue MAYHEM, which seems to be Gaga re-embracing the sounds and visuals from those early years that people have clearly shown they love from her. Had she done this pre-2022, I don't think she'd be getting the same positive reception, but seeing how continually more people have been consuming her music with these types of aesthetics since then, it was the perfect time for her to do this and give them what they want. Katy tried something similar with 143, but that didn't work because...well, because of too many reasons to list, but a big one is she didn't call back to her peak properly while also creating something fresh, new, and unique like Gaga looks to be doing with MAYHEM. Maybe this really is a reactionary album to Bloody Mary blowing up the way it did like many of us have speculated.
