I've never really been that pressed about getting the continuation to Telephone tbh. It will never live up to people's expectations especially after 14 years of overhyping. I say let it stay in the past and don't ruin the memory.

It really was a different time and IMO was objectively way more enjoyable. Essentially like a whole ATRL dedicated to Bey.

 

From the outside looking in, the forums disappearing felt so random and unnecessary. And hella premature too. 

 

Total conjecture, but I kinda get the sense that some of the people working the forums didn't really know how to navigate the advent of social media. Because forums, by comparison, essentially felt like an extra step to access discourse and debate that was already taking place on the social media channels you're already on (Twitter, FB, etc at the time). 

 

IIRC the forums (or at least one of em) started toggling between viewable for all and only viewable for members. Then there was a lot of gatekeeping around tea spilling onto social media (see above), insiders departing etc.

 

For some reason, I think I also recall some of 'the mods moaning about the costs of keeping the forum up. The bigger the forum, the bigger the cost of running it. And I don't remember there being ads (ala what keeps ATRL and similar going).

 

Also, platforms like ATRL, LSA, PJ etc can always thrive because they centralize all the stan bases and are kinda driven by broad, wide-ranging discourse as well as more nuanced stan debates (Base threads).

 

Overal, though, it's a shame because I really think BeyHive Board in particular had the potential to be a mini-ATRL.

Yeah it was great to have a separate space, but at the same time.. Those forums were toxic af. It was like a cult, if you dared to be even slightly critical of anything you'd have mods and posters jumping down ur throat immediately  

 

It also had a strict hierarchy with different cliques of members who would always back each other and acting as a mob if one of them got in an argument – again, just like a cult

 

I think it failed in part due to internal drama, and I can't say I'm surprised

…the majority of us would be banned from that board. Any time anyone said anything remotely critical of B they were banned and shunned. It was kinda scary. There was definitely in-fighting going on because some of the mods had inside tea and others would act like they did and they didn't. It was egos clashing in the worst way.
