Billboard 200 to include video streams

Video and audio data from YouTube, along with visual plays from several music streaming services, will soon be factored into the Billboard 200 albums chart, it was announced on Friday. In addition to YouTube, officially licensed video content plays from Apple, Spotify, Tidal and Vevo will be included in the album chart's calculations.

The inclusion of video data into the Billboard 200 arrives five years after audio streams were added, marking the chart's shift from a measure of pure sales to a consumption model. The addition of video will also impact Billboard's genre album consumption charts, such as Country, R&B/Hip-Hop, Latin and others.

In contrast with song charts, which can be impacted by user-generated videos, only official licensed video content uploaded by or on behalf of rights holders will be counted for the Billboard 200 and other albums charts. The changes take effect with the charts dated Jan. 18, 2020, which will reflect sales and streams for the period of Jan. 3-9.

Not when latin songs don't get nearly as much streams in US as Hip-Hop songs.

If that were the case then they'd have similar dominance on the Streaming Songs chart.

I don't think there would be much of a difference cause most of those streams come from Latin America and Billboard only counts the ones from the US, right?

I also forgot, this will boost K-Pop acts like BTS and BLACKPINK on the album charts too.

True, but it would still make a difference I think, even slightly it'll show. There's still a huge Latin population that uses YT in America.

get your ass back with @davemeyers and feed us sickening videos @arianagrande

katy would've def benefitted from this during her witness era when she needed support

Witness views were mostly out of the US. Like I think Bon Appetit had like 100M of its views from the US. (this was a few years ago so it's probably different now obviously)

Looking at US "smashes" on YT, they all struggle to pass 200M-300M.

I mean, I feel like since people are not really buying albums anymore, this makes sense. How else are you going to measure the popularity of albums? It will have to do with streaming, video, and all that stuff that is more connected with the songs on the album. That's what happens once music is unbundled. Plus, I feel like this won't actually have that big of an effect tbh :michael:

It makes sense. It's part of how people consume music so why not?

I read the first line as FORCED, which this is, but I guess anything to shake up a stale chart where digital sales & physical CDs no longer count.

Hopefully people will finally start putting effort in their videos.

I thought they included video streams already, I remember reading about it in the BTW era and people complained about it. Am I wrong?

Wait I thought it was already included before :skull:

All the time I wasted looping Lover

:skull:

but arent most user-generated videos licensed I-...

NBA Youngboy will benefit the most out of this :rip:

Music videos are highkey dying in the us so I doubt it will affect is *that* much

I can see artists now waiting to release music videos until the week of the album release :rip:
