I don't know if I'm misremembering the past, but this feels like a modern phenomenon for Americans (and other rich countries) to be disillusioned to the privilege they have. There's a user in here describing struggle as: "After my monthly expenses of my higher education, whatever food I want, my car and its weekly gasoline fill, the heating and air conditioning for my apartment, my unlimited internet/wifi, netflix, Spotify, my newest smartphone, nights of partying and eating out, I'm only left with $500!"
