Wow... When you put them all together like that, you really see the quality And these aren't even their "experimental"/alternative records, these were mainstream albums back then! The girls today could never.

That's why Broke With Expensive Taste is one of the best debut albums ever. If you listened only to the instrumentals, you'd think it's impossible to get a catchy rap/pop song out of most of them. But she somehow makes it work. The Competition demo/Luxury combo is the best example. Same beat, two completely different songs.

Exactly. There would be no PC Music without CAPSULE or Perfume, it's one of their most obvious influences. Just listen to Kim Petras' new song, it sounds taken straight from JPN.

I feel like their visuals are also heavily inspired by 2000s Kylie, in a subtle way. The Can't Get You Outta My Head, Love At First Sight and In Your Eyes videos all look very Perfume-esque with the sleek, digital backdrops and the quirky styling of the dancers, and Sweet Refrain is basically a remake of Come Into My World. Although, when it comes to the music itself, I would argue that Yasutaka Nakata ended up taking all that futuristic aesthetic to the next level. Fever has great melodies and visuals, but the production is much less daring and out-there than what you can find in GAME and in general in his early work for Perfume.

I think it's intentional... As in this album represents a particular time in her life, so it "starts" in the middle of her life and it continues beyond what she's singing about here. Otherwise it would make no sense because there are no actual interludes in the album, it's just the intro and the outro.

This is a grower... The focus is not on making instant hits (I really can't see any song here smashing in the future) but on offering a solid, consistent album. It's more different from Short n' Sweet than I expected, but it still sounds like her. She's building a really personal sound and image, yeah it's full of 70s references and retro vibes (which no one is doing right now anyway) but they don't sound/look like a cliché; it ends up being surprisingly atemporal (kinda like the first Lana albums). I don't particularly like Jack Antonoff, but I don't get why everybody is hating on him... The production is great. I love the use of strings and horns! It sounds lush. Even if there are more mid tempo songs than on Short n' Sweet, there's also always a lot more going on in every track compared to the slower songs there (Dumb & Poetic, Slim Pickins). I think a lot of the unfavorable opinions come from people who just listened once at midnight and labeled it immediately as boring because they didn't fall in love with any song. Everything starts to click in the next listens. Even if it's hated right now, the reception will get better with time.

I just need another Don't Smile. I remember listening to the album for the first time, thinking it was cute, and then Don't Smile came on and made me stan immediately. Hope Goodbye is as good of a closer.

Ugh they're so underrated... Some of the best production and melodies of pop history and they're barely acknowledged in online spaces. I'm mad!!! Talking about non-album B-side masterpieces, let me add one of my favorites: Best song ever... they were serving even during their worst era!

#Beautiful and GTFO both fit the description() but they're actually great. She just needs a cool set / photography that fits the ambience of the song. I loved the depressed housewife vibe of GTFO. But yeah otherwise it's usually "hi i'm mariah carey and i'm in a mansion / limousine lipsyncing to my new single" Why even bother.

LOL I'm a Bey fan as well but Mayhem is better as an album than Cowboy Carter... If she got AOTY with that, Gaga can win as well. It's just a matter of people thinking it's "the right time" for her to win.

Her best album (Born This Way) opens and closes with her two best songs: Marry The Night & The Edge Of Glory.

Her best song... It's pure sensuality. It was made for Kylie's voice.

Lana or Azealia would have been a serve

As a Charli fan since True Romance I really don't see what the fuss is all about. Yeah, it's a solid record, but I don't find it particularly better than most of her discography. Frankly, I think that, after ignoring the Vroom Vroom EP and the Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 mixtapes (which imo were her peak, and where she really proved herself as a forward thinking and influential pop artist), the critics have been trying for a while to redeem themselves and give her the place she deserves in the culture. Since the mixtape era, each of her projects has been more critically acclaimed than the last, even if Charli and CRASH were disappointing for some fans. BRAT has been kind of the perfect moment for Charli. She had all that goodwill from critics waiting for that really good, undeniable album to crown her, and the more experimental approach in production and songwriting (even the "anti-pop star" style of the cover) is exactly what they wanted. Add to that the unexpected mainstream resurgence (which has also been brewing for a few years) and it's the perfect narrative for an AOTY.
