How different would Pop be without GAME?

Featured Replies

Seeing as how this group is going on hiatus, I would like to ask, how much global impact on pop does this album have?

I've never heard of them before, so not different at all.

Respectfully, I have never heard of the group or the album in my entire life so I'd assume not that different

Poppy literally took direct inspiration from Perfume and this album in particular for Poppy.computer and Am I A Girl.

Respectfully, a lot of this album sounds so heavily inspired by Kylie Minogue's Fever. You could literally sing the chorus of 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' over the refrain to 'Secret Secret' and it would fit almost perfectly. Not surprising since Yasutaka Nakata has remixed a lot of Kylie songs so he's probably very familiar with her work.

Perfume GAME inspired both the production and technology-based lyrics of Poppy.computer and Am I A Girl?. GAME inspired all of Jpop, electronic music and by extension, Kpop. Hell, the EDM boom of early 2010s were inspired by the production on GAME and Triangle. Madeon, Zedd as well as several others like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Alexander Stan all were inspired by the production of this album. It's production techniques inspired what we know as hyperpop and pc music.

Charli use of autotune is very much taken from this album.

Well duh, he is mega fan of Kylie Minogue. However, GAME is not that similar to Fever, the number of vocal glitches, lifeless vocals and the experimental polyrhythms make this way more out there than anything on Fever.

they definitely have big influences in Japan but outside, they're more of a artist's artist, I'm sure Nakata is very much respected within the genre

I feel like their visuals are also heavily inspired by 2000s Kylie, in a subtle way. The Can't Get You Outta My HeadLove At First Sight  and In Your Eyes videos all look very Perfume-esque with the sleek, digital backdrops and the quirky styling of the dancers, and Sweet Refrain is basically a remake of Come Into My World.

Although, when it comes to the music itself, I would argue that Yasutaka Nakata ended up taking all that futuristic aesthetic to the next level. Fever has great melodies and visuals, but the production is much less daring and out-there than what you can find in GAME and in general in his early work for Perfume.

Exactly. There would be no PC Music without CAPSULE or Perfume, it's one of their most obvious influences.

Just listen to Kim Petras' new song, it sounds taken straight from JPN.

There wouldn't be any music period without PERFUME as they invented it in 2006 with their COMPLETE BEST album

I definitely agree. GAME is a lot more out there and experimental than Fever; I feel like the former is a precursor to hyper-pop whilst the latter's influence is more apparent in the slick chart-pop the likes of Dua Lipa made earlier this decade.
