The German music market itself is very big (Germany is always alternating with the UK as third-biggest music market in the world). But you're right, our global appeal is rather limited. I'd say there are several reasons for this. 1) Language barrier. Obviously, German does not have the same kind of cultural reach as English or French. The impact of German music usually does not extend beyond Central European countries/Eastern Europe to a smaller extent. 2) There isn't really a big desire for cultural domination in Germany compared to other Western countries (which is partially also the result of the language barrier). German music is mostly directed at a domestic audience and there is little appetite for a culturally hegemonic status which explains why German music isn't being pushed harder globally. 3) You could argue that the global influence of German music has already peaked. Germany produced many internationally successful acts in the 80s like Nena or Kraftwerk during the New German Wave era, but after that it went downhill. I'd say there hasn't really been a cohesive, unified "German sound" again since then. 4) I think another factor is that most of our best-selling artists are veteran artists who've been in the business for decades as opposed to newer artists which also makes the rise of new international stars harder. Helene is the German Taylor Swift, same levels of success in all departments. Helene even made the Top 10 list of highest-earning musicians globally a few years ago despite not even touring outside German-speaking countries. Commercially, the Top 3 highest-certified German female artists are: Helene Fischer Andrea Berg Sarah Connor Sarah Connor is the only one who has always done pop music, Helene is a pop/Schlager hybrid, Andrea Berg is strictly a Schlager artist. I'd argue the most universally well-known female German pop artist is Nena (who technically was the lead singer of a band of the same name at first in the 80s). Her hits are universally recognized among all demographics.

Back in 2008 already. She signed up for six albums in 2005 and then it was amended to five albums in 2008 when Kesha was forced to return to Luke and start working with him again. It could be the case, but currently the specifics of her contract are unknown afaik.
