"Everywhere" is my fave but all are great debut singles! They don't make them like they used to do anymore.

It's the quintessential Mariah Carey album, IMO. A perfect transition from her early career and what was to come right after when she started to really reinvent herself, and this is where it all started. Legendary record.

ATRL hates Christina (congratulations, DMF!), so she'll most likely lose, but girl did Teen pop, Latin pop, Christmas music, vocal-pop, R&B, soul-pop, dance-pop, pop/rock, electropop, Country, reggaeton...

I love the titles and the irony of it all.

I consider The Fame Monster the pinnacle of that Golden Era for pop girls, so Loud can't really compete, even though it's very iconic on its own. While the first kills song after song up until the end, the latter is more of a rollercoaster ride.

Well, they had full support at Arista to make them break into the US market and, when it clicked, they absolutely ruled Pop radio for more than a whole year; up until "Girls Like You" made Maroon 5 surpass them, they were still the group with most weeks at #1 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart (and their US chart activity barely lasted four years, let's be real). That really speaks to their supremacy in 1994, especially when you consider they placed not one, not two, but three (!) hits on Top 10 of the year-end charts. This is something that is hard to do these days, when songs are able to last forever in the charts, so imagine being able to do that back then. The album was such a behemoth that it made them look like a fad when it was time for their second offering. The Bridge was still quite successful, but in a much smaller scale. When they weren't the shiny new thing anymore, the label tried for a while, but then just pushed them into AC fodder territory. All in all, I would say it was a lightning in a bottle moment: perfect timing for a new pop act, and they knew how to blend trends while also presenting something new to the table, and all the support of their label to make them happen, whatever it took (they reshaped their whole album and public image, ffs).

Music of the Sun is one of the worst albums ever released by a pop girl, IMO. They were really trying to set Rihanna up for one-hit wonder status and she had to fight to carve her own lane because she clearly wasn't her label's favorite and it shows. Yours Truly, on the other hand, isn't the best album ever, as well, but at least it positioned Ariana Grande as a vocal prodigy and a talent to watch?

I didn't know who he was before I opened the thread and was reminded of him, so I'd say no.

My fave example is Kat DeLuna being a consistent flop everywhere, but almost always hitting the Top 20 in Belgium of all places up until 2011. MIA everywhere, #17 in Belgium (Flanders) MIA everywhere, but #12 in Flanders and #7 in Wallonia

Same. I do remember it goes something like "I need this, I need that...". A bit similar to how "*****" goes with "I'm a *****, I'm a lover, I'm a child...". It's quite alike in that approach to the lyrics. Maybe that's why they chose it to follow it up. But it was a dumb decision, as it pigeonholed her instead of making her branch out and show a different side to the audience. Way to turn someone into a one-hit wonder. Such a shame.

Oh, wow! I'm surprised to see someone giving props to this track here! I always thought this would be a better follow-up to "*****" than "I Need", as it showcased versatility instead of doubling down and sounding repetitive. What's done is done, though.

This was my introduction to Elliegend. I love it and was quite obsessed for a while. That was a classic, that was a classic!

The Target ad should've been the music video. Waaaaaaaaay better.

Yep. "Slow Down Baby" is the one I think really warranted a single release other than what got out there (and the fact that they didn't even try is weird). But, other than that, I don't see anything really happening. "Nasty" would be a better option than whatever else is left on the album (not that there are not great tracks, like "Understand" or "Save Me from Myself", I just don't see them working as major singles, at most side releases).

It's quite obviously Teenage Dream and it's hardly a contest (those two very eloquently written posts by @Swiftienator13 and @Genie in a Bottle above prove it), even though Loud is great and would've been way more iconic had Rihanna kept it going for a while longer (instead of cutting it short for a new era, as she always did at the time).

This is right. Back to Basics is great, but it needed further single material (and should've been a longer era, to begin with). "Nasty" is fun, pop and breezy, while fitting the theme sonically (even though it would be a bit of a mismatch lyrically). Another missed opportunity (in a long series, LBR, when it comes to her career).
