It’s both. Celebrities are the faces that the oligarchy use to pacify and distract us. Ed being butchered alive for following the orders of this oligarch (who absolutely should get public scrutiny) will make it more difficult for other celebrities to do the same down the road. It is absolutely essential that both face blowback, even if it should be more distributed than squarely on Ed. Kraft deserves scrutiny, but I’m happy to see public backlash at all when that was missing when celebrities have spoken up for Palestine in the past (e.g., Melissa Barrera).

I agree. I hope that one lesson (among countless, for that matter) that really crystallizes in the zeitgeist because of this stupid war is that we need new energy infrastructure. It is clear that America depends on the Middle East for energy. I'm sure most of us all knew that. But I don't think the average American did. I'm sure most people felt that we produced enough natural gas that we would be good in any case, but that's clearly not true. So, hopefully we see more people wanting full energy independence and the best way for that is a renewable energy buildout. I also think we need to be more ambitious than the Green New Deal. We are at a point where even switching to renewable energy now would not help in the grand scheme of things with climate change. We need to massively reduce car dependency in our country (and Canada). But, that would require we rethink urban (and suburban) development such that not everyone needs a car to live and do basic day-to-day things. So, plans for building new housing would need to consider this so that we aren't continuing to build out massive suburban developments that are economically unsustainable and incite a culture of car dependency which is bad for the climate. While I would support more radical ideas like massive disruption to beef production because of its environmental toll (which is worse than data centers, btw), I know this is not viable in an election—but I don't know how we make progress in this way. We really ignore the climatological cost of our animal agricultural systems. But, renewable energy and improving population density would be a massive step in the right direction.

I didn't vote. They're both greedy as hell. I think the only thing that's notably different about them, in their art, is that Beyoncé incorporates her wealth into her art more brazenly in (incoherent) ways: "I just might be a Black Bill Gates in the making" being on the same album as the line, "Call me Malcolm X," will never not be funny to me—even though Lemonade is one of my favorite albums ever. Taylor tends to stick to heartbreak songs—though she still fumbles and does billionaire nonsense with songs like Wi$h Li$t.

I'm curious to hear why you think it's so wild to say this? The USA—the paragon of Western culture which is allegedly very pro-LGBTQ—is actively defunding research for healthcare for LGBTQ people and is shutting down university funding for any schools that have pro-LGBTQ measures. Some of the countries with the most anti-LGBTQ beliefs are Christian. Japan is extremely anti-gay and it's essentially a territory for the USA and is not remotely Muslim. In the USA, Muslims are measurably more progressive than Christians (this can even be seen in Pew research dating back to 2007). Yes, there is a lot of pointed homophobia in the Middle East. But, much of this is due to the fact that these countries are the target for military occupation by the west. It is impossible for countries to evolve socially when their resources are being stolen nonstop. Imperialism has a lot of nasty side effects. But, all of this to say, you should avoid making the generic, Islamophobic argument that "Muslims are uniquely homophobic." It's a tacit admission of your character more than anything else.

Mind you, same sex marriage, interracial marriage, and interfaith marriage are all illegal in Israel and none of you are mentioning that. Instead, you’re choosing to fixate on an occupied Muslim-majority region. Even on the issue of LGBTQ rights, the West began to take our lives somewhat seriously very recently. You all seem to forget how recently the AIDS crisis in the states was. Or how long it took the UK to apologize for chemically castrating Alan Turing, a gay computer scientist who was pivotal to ending WW2.

The Palestinian people have been occupied and abused by Israeli settlers for more than 70 years. I’ve known about that before October 7th. Don’t project your ignorance of the horrors of the Israeli occupation as a shield for generic “Muslims are homophobic” rhetoric. It’s transparent. The entire world is infested with homophobia. You rushing to minimize the horrors of the Palestinian people by claiming homophobia is a lazy admission of your own ignorance. The whole world is homophobic. That changes nothing about the brutality the Palestinian people have faced for as long as any of us can remember.

Every country on the planet discriminates against LGBTQ people—America and Israel included. That does not justify or warrant waving away mass slaughter of any group of people. You can justify literally anything with that way of thinking.

Israel bombing Palestinians is more harmful to LGBTQ Palestinians than anything you think is happening to those people by the hands of Palestinian culture.

Nowhere does she acknowledge the genocide of the Palestinian people in a long, tired post where she centers herself in the discourse. Ridiculous. She should be ashamed. This is why most celebrities should stay quiet.

Jacob Coxon is not a researcher (see his Google Scholar) with any meaningful credentials in academic research. He was just a random young person working in the AI industry that happened to be involved with model training—this could be as small of a task as clicking the "run" script. This is just another example of someone fanning sci-fi anxieties for clout. There are existential concerns with AI, yes. But, the idea that AI will go rogue and enslave or slaughter all of humanity is ridiculous and not grounded in reality. Plenty of more credible AI researchers with Turing awards (e.g., Richard Sutton and Yan LeCun) have been clear that LLMs are a mathematical dead end for AI.
