I think it was mostly a rebranding of image rather a totally different sound.

 

The album was called Moonlight and from the leak of the video with Ricky she was still playing the cute girl in vintage style.

 

My guess is her team wanted her to have a more adult imagery. Dangerous Woman (song) was recorded during winter 2015/2016, so i believe the re-arrange the all project to appear more good-girl-gone-bad-ish.

I remember her revealing the initial Moonlight tracklist on a random chalkboard. The ME tour where she just raises her hands and 'f-f-focus on me' kept playing and her fans went CRAZYYYYY. She had that little 'oops heres a little smasha for yall'

 

Too bad she squeezed it right in between the Purpose rollout and Adele's 25 comeback, not only that but that **** ass Jamie Foxx vocal in the chorus made her audience HATE her badddddd! She was very powerful though because she made it debut Top 10 despite the terrible release.

 

I remember people thinking she'd destroy Kworb but she ended up getting eaten alive by Love Yourself and Hello

 

This was her most 'popgirl'y mini era tbh, I truly felt she was such a good pop sellout during this single, like she genuinely wanted COMMERCIAL success and was out for blood. While the subsequent DW era was middling, Side to Side basically made sure she was unfloppable so all was well.

While DW succeeded by all metrics in hindsight, what with Into You and S2S on their way to being Diamond hits I think Moonlight should've proceeded as needed with DW being its GGGB Reloaded, sadly a lot of tragic incidents since then shaped her to do Sweetener/TUN but I truly think a Moonlight/DW back to back release would've been perfect.

Let me focus on the positive: the dance break is great and the video is incredible. That's it.

No, in 2020. 

So much better than Problem since Day 1! That pre-chorus is STILL the most delicious in her discog and I love that it's basically a k-pop MV.
