2009 was. The Taylor-Kanye-Bey drama, Gaga doing Paparazzi, Madonna tributing Michael Jackson, P!nk doing a f***ing trapeze act, and Katy doing a messy Queen cover

  • 2009 would be 2nd. Hilary Duff was at the 2003 VMAs making that night more iconic and historical.

Yes it did. The VMAs never had another iconic performance after 2003.

I know you're being sarcastic but I don't remember a thing about 2004-2008 VMAs

Nah, 2009. Christina faded too much in the minds of the public, while people like Beyonce, Taylor swift, Kanye West and Gaga are still A-listers and that was a signature night In all of their careers

2009 vmas with paparazzi, single ladies, sober and the Kanyegate was iconic. Actually the line up was superb for that edition: taylor, green day, pink, bey, gaga, alicia keys, katy, muse, and the michael jackson tribute with Janet and Madonna

Hard to imagine so much star power together on a VMAs anymore

I don't know if I'd call the 2009 VMAs the "peak" compared to the 99 2000 and 2003 editions when mtv was still considered a big deal, but it was a great return to form from the awful 07,08 award shows and the best since those ones.

Why was the 2008 VMAs so wack?

Yes. Everything has peaked with britney spears 25 years ago.

iirc since it was ages ago they moved it from Ny to Vegas those years and the venue was smaller. it just seemed like they were airing the show with budget cuts. The 04/05 ones were a little weird too since it was Miami but not to that extent.

They switched back to NY the year after (09)

was that the case for the 2004-2006 vmas?

You forgot Shakira and P!nk wore the same dress that night 🤣🤣🤣🤣

the only part of the 2003 VMAs i remember/know about was the Brit x Madge x Xtinct performance.

Nah the 04/05 vmas were pretty standard and the performances were pretty good for the most part. The main problem with those years was to be frank, they were just very unmemorable. No messy moments or pop culture moments. Pop music wasn't really a focus during those years either. Hip hop/ Emo was. I think Diddy hosted those years too :rip:. 2009 definitely brought in a pop resurgence and it really impacted that years show.
