If Ariana released 'Moonlight' after 'Focus'?

Featured Replies

In 2015, Ariana Grande released 'Focus', lead single from her planned album 'Moonlight', which she later retitled to 'Dangerous Woman'.

What do you think would have happened with Ariana's career if she proceeded with releasing 'Moonlight' with this lead single - both short term and long term?

Didn't this turn out to be more successful than the actual lead single Dangerous Woman in the end anyway? :dies:

I think she would've been fine either way.

i don't think anything much would change, maybe Side to Side or Be Alright would've been the 2nd single instead

Dangerous Woman has over double the units of Focus, the only difference is that Focus had a slightly higher chart peak in the US (7 vs 8).

Oh really? I was under the impression that Focus did better this entire time :skull: I remember seeing a thread about it crossing a billion views on YouTube and stuff, maybe that skewed my perception

feel like it would have bombed

I am glad she went back to the drawing board, recorded more songs and named the album after a new song

I do wish Moonlight was released, as Dangerous Woman was a little all over the place. Might have sold less, but the concept would be cohesive. (Dangerous Woman, Greedy, Everyday, Sometimes, Side To Side, and Jason's Song were generic and stick out from the previous concept)

'Moonlight' originally had:

"Baby Loves" (intro) (Unreleased)

"Moonlight"

"Be Alright"

"Let Me Love You" (feat. Lil Wayne)

"Knew Better / Forever Boy"

"All That" (Unreleased)

"Hi" (Unreleased)

"She Got Her Own" (feat. Victoria Monét) (Sent to Charlie's Angels OST)

"Female" (interlude) (Unreleased)

"Leave Me Lonely" (feat. Macy Gray)

"Thinking Bout You"

"Focus"

Seeing this tracklist, "Be Alright", "Thinking Bout You", and "Let Me Love You" would have been the subsequent singles.

If they added "Into You", "Ain't About What You Got" (sent to TV show STAR) & "I Don't Care"? We get a perfect, cohesive, mature nighttime album, and "Into You" would replace "Thinking Bout You" as a single.

'Moonlight' (Revised Version):

"Baby Loves" (intro)

"Moonlight"

"Be Alright"

"Into You" (NEW)

"Let Me Love You" (feat. Lil Wayne)

"Knew Better / Forever Boy"

"All That"

"Hi"

"She Got Her Own" (feat. Victoria Monét)

"Female" (interlude)

"Leave Me Lonely" (feat. Macy Gray)

"Thinking Bout You"

"I Don't Care" (NEW)

"Ain't About What You Got" (NEW)

"Focus"

It only did great on YouTube, the MV was highly promoted there, it barely has 300 million Spotify streams.

i think she would've been fine. Maybe it would take her a lil more time to get where she did but i think things would've worked well.

the album probably would've performed the same cause i genuinely don't think it was overhauled THAT much

Same :dies: I think people overestimate how much she actually replaced/reworked

Her career would have prolly been the same considering DW both song and album weren't that ground breaking. Focus was a bit underwhelming but she has had many underwhelming flops throughout her careers. At the end of the day, she is successful overall as an artist because of her TALENTS and her one in a generation VOICE, not because 1 or 2 singles or an era. It didnt change much. If the change was from Focus to TUN then it would have been a different story. Dangerous Woman, despite being a good album, ummmm not so much would have changed regarding career trajectory.

It would've performed the same ? I mean, Moonlight was basically Dangerous Woman with Focus as the lead.
