What are the current MPG tiers?

Featured Replies

As the years go on, the term MPG seems to be shifting in meaning. It used to only be household names with massive success such as Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Gaga etc.

But with Addison, Tate etc. being called MPGs, the bar seems to keep dropping.

So who are the current MPGs and their tiers?

Not too much on Tate.. she literally has a #1 on BBH100. Addison on the other hand though…

Sure but do you accept Kim Petras being an MPG though

Addison is completely undebatable for me. She doesn't even have 1 billion cumulative spotify streams, and doesn't have any sales or touring going for her.

Tate has a better case but Ariana wasn't called a MPG by many people until TUN despite being bigger than Tate. Tate has a #1 song but it's quite limited to USA and is only pulling in 1.5m global streams, which is very low for pop hits.

Maybe if T8's only other charting song besides her #1 was a #55 peaking sample featuring Nicki Minaj we could compare the two

Ariana's case is the perfect example of how much the bar has been lowered over the years.

Ariana has been a MPG since My Everything.

If you recall, there were debates for YEARS. From My Everything to Dangerous Woman to Sweetener. From Problem to the release date of TUN (the song not the album). That's a whole 5 years. During those five years, there were countless threads on a daily basis here asking if Ariana was a MPG or not :skull: These new girls have it so easy tbh. Back in the days, someone like Tate would only be considered a B-list girl like Meghan Trainor or Jessie J at best. The only qualified MPG (regarding the standards 10 years ago) now should only include: Billie, Sabrina and Olivia (if her next era is a success).

Jessie J and Meghan Trainor were arguably bigger in their peak than Tate right now.

Jessie's debut album produced global hits like Domino and Price Tag. Bang Bang was also a global smash.

Meghan also had multiple hits including AATB and Like I'm Gonna Lose You. Her debut album was #9 on IFPI year end.

Those are more impressive achievements than Tate's current #1 local to US and Canada which is only pulling in 1.5m streams.

Yeah I agree but the fact that no one called them MPG (maybe Meghan for a super short period of time) but Tate has it sooooo easy rn. I wouldnt call her a MPG yet.

In fact, this is actually a super accurate list, and I feel like Addison will never get there tbh.

Addison still hasn't really had a "breakthrough" moment imo. I think we need to go back to the criteria of at least two successful eras across multiple metrics. MPGs should not be one hit wonders and need to be recognisable.

Even Katy who is mocked for lacking longevity had 3 successful albums, could pull off a $200m tour and had a recognisable identity. I don't even know what Addison's image is, nor do I think she is known to most people.

The likes of Billie, Olivia and Sabrina are A-list

Tate, Chappell, Charli and Disgracie are B-list

Rihanna is not current, and Dua did make it. Apart from that I agree.

Weirdly enough, Rihanna's current streaming numbers are on par with the active MPGs so... I am not a fan but she feels like a legendary MPG.

Dua is debatable. She was big but somehow I feel like she wasnt on that level compared to the actual MPGs. Her peak was quite short and she is not yet a super house hold name. Even Miley feels like a household name more than Dua.

Dua, the one who's performing in sold out stadiums this week? :gaycat7:

That's because Miley is a tabloids name and is linked to a huge Disney brand while Dua does her best to stay away from them, she's unproblematic in every sense, doesn't give people anything to talk about as a celebrity, she lives like a normal rich person. Musically speaking, how is she not a household name?

Taylor kinda needs her own category for occupying such a unique role. She's equally relevant among her legacy audience (which is also the biggest of any 21st century artist) and the new generation.

In my head, a MPG is someone whose next lead single could be expected to debut at #1. I think that's the case for all the ones I listed as MPG's, and used to be the case for former ones.

I don't think Dua, Doja or Selena ever had that power.

Not in my house.

Rihanna is inactive, hasn't put out an album in a decade and her last hit song was not in the last 5 years. Not MPG behaviour.

Dua is very much active for both of her 2020s eras, she's doing sold out stadium tours and she has current and relevant hits, so she's MPG material for sure.

Gaga's last lead singles tho didn't reach #1, or, in your logic, they were not expected to. But she's still undoubtedly mpg.

Dua's home market is UK, the others are pretty much all american. Dua doesn't fit americans standard, they're all about personality, drama and narratives, even musically they might have had a disco phase, Dua is the opposite of what they like, she's still huge WW.

I agree with this list. What do you think the criteria is for when someone falls out of MPG status?

E.g. Xtina and Katy. At what point did they fall off.
