I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect this. 

 

In one regard, I'd say the era has been a "success", at least optically in the sense of How We Roll, heightened visibility, and even down to repairing relationships at key outlets like The Breakfast Club. The Low video seems to be generating good traction, too. 

 

At the same time, there are just some unavoidable faux pas. This two-year-old EP, folding into an album, which by the time it drops, has only 3 new tracks, is bizarre af. Fairly certain, she's going for the RIAA plaque of it all, given that HWR will essentially ensure the album goes at least Gold. But it's just messy, disjointed, and not the most creative. 

 

Then there are these deluxe tracks. EASILY head and shoulders better than the entire album. She obviously tacked them on as bonus/deluxe after submitting the final album. Again, disorganized af. Now, the better songs run the risk of getting overlooked, as most (of the few that are rushing to listen) will simply stream the original version. 

 

At this point, I'm in season with her where it's a case of: just get these wins as, where, and when she can. It's literally (literally) been 10+ years of "Ciara needs to do this, Ciara needs to do that...to get back on track' and it never happens. 

 

I'd be more sympathetic had she been ironing out the kinks of this indie route for a year or two post-Jackie. But the fact that we're at a decade plus with her antics makes it a borderline point exercise us venting about what she "needs" to do. I'm more so on just willing and wishing her more Level Ups and How We Rolls, as both an inspired, good body of work seems to be too much of an ask, as does carving out a straightforward campaign. 

 

To her slight defense, she has gone INNNNN on the promo for this, but I wonder what her take will be when the returns are sizing up to be extremely minuscule. All this pomo to likely not chart on the Billboard 200 or chart very low. I mean, I want to be pleasantly surprised but I doubt it.

Is Low being sent to radio? It should

As controversial as the album has been to the fans, I do think it's done its job with her more casual listeners. I haven't seen one of her projects have such a positive word of mouth since self-titled. 
 

Sales and chart placements will obviously be low, but when it's all said and done the album units from How We Roll (and hopefully Dance With Me and Low eventually) will make the numbers look better overall and that's a win in itself. 

 

I wonder how many units until the albums post-Evo go gold. It would be kind of legendary if the certifications get updated this era.

I hear you, but I've verbatim heard her admit in interviews (kinda blink and you miss it) that she's not entirely happy with where she is and still has goals to scale to higher heights. So, she's aware of her predicament.

 

My instinct is that, from a business standpoint, she's good. She's spilled about Level Up being the gift that keeps giving via licensing deals etc. She also has had other songs used for ESPN campaigns etc. So, I'm sure this indie experiment is working for her financially. At least more than the major label run was.

 

However, she has done a LOT of promo for this. Just go on YouTube. Multiple press days, 30+ video interviews it feels since she announced that album. That's hair, make-up, wardrobe, etc. All of that to (potentially) not chart at all?

 

I'm sorry, but we have to look at this through a fiscal lens. It doesn't present as a successful venture on any metric. UNLESS she is looking at this as a purely brand exposure play. But the notion of building for nearly a decade to "potentially" get the odd Level Up here and there is just not it. Especially when it doesn't look that even that is on the cards?

To be fair she's used those interviews to talk about Ten to One Rum, the OAM skincare and the Why Not You? foundation as well as the new movie she's produced. She probably sees it as a good opportunity to promote multiple businesses at the same time.

Keep in mind a few tidbits:

 

• Nearly all of the promo has been through Instagram and YouTube interviews. As an artist, I know she's looking at it as a smart way to be seen as omnipresent to reach the masses easier, but as a label head, she should know it takes so much more. There's no reason she shouldn't have been performing these songs live. Be it TV, live concerts, which is my reasonable request, or "live performance" videos on her YouTube, which seems to be the way to go now days! 

 

• Her biggest promo stops have been Vouge, Breakfast Club & Open Thoughts podcast. These appearances have treated her like a legend, but they haven't delved into the actual album and music for more than 10 minutes per each interview. The album talk has been treated as a side quest, while time is spent elaborating on her personal, personality and marriage. 

• No one has been streaming the album heavily, so it's no surprise where the album has landed. I'm more surprised her team hasn't tried to do anything to get ppl to stream the album. 

• The album is not really known to exist with the GP, and once they see there's three projects (EP, LP & LP deluxe) to stream, they'll get confused, stream a few songs and go on about their day. The actual fans have already been tapped out since she announced the track list. 

• No one took into account this woman hasn't released a full length LP, to chart and be submitted for Award categories, since 2019? Over half a decade now! Why hasn't there been constant promotion for the music? Live listening parties, meet & greats before release day, fan give aways, again LIVE PERFORMANCES- anything to get her back into the General Public's good graces as an ARTIST!

Pretty much said this a few pages ago. Luckily for her the album has sold 100k units. 

You'd think she would delete the EP, but I guess that makes too much sense for Beauty Marks Entertainment.

 

Sigh at her missing the Billboard 200 entirely. I can't say I'm surprised. It's a bit of a nothingy/indifference from me. 

 

That said, I'm surprised at some of the gymnastics a few posts up defending her promo run yielding no tangible results. I'm sorry, but if her press run can't sell her primary product (music), what are the chances of it having any kind of worthwhile benefit for her rum or skincare line (which she even said is "going through a transition at the moment").

 

I don't want to pile on her, but to outright not chart is embarrassing af and there is no way of spinning it. Are we looking at US sales of -10k? Like, WTF.

She was never going to sell by the bucketload (legacy act), but her returns are getting scarily diminishing. 

 

The only slight reprieve is that she can either a) look at this as her altar calling to ditch albums and solely release music via the less pressured EP format or b) get her ducks in a row and actually carve out a non-messy, non-multi-part, non-spread across different years album/album campaign. Go in on physicals. Where are the multiple covers? Cassettes? Variants?! Tour bundling (which there is still a technical way around). Something! 

 

I appreciate that she's indie, but it's sad watching her fumble the simplest things so consistently. I'm sure had they gotten their ish together and stuck to a concrete, market-savvy plan (physicals, bundling, and super long pre-order frame), she'd AT LEAST have charted. Instead, she launched a campaign that saw us able to literally watch them "figure out the rest" in real-time. It's not becoming of an artist of her stature, nor at a time when other acts are managing to deliver better results indie.

Separate but related, she absolutely needs to pair Beauty Marks with a proper distributor. BMG, Empire, someone. There is a premium tier of indie that really does its thing with playlisting and radio, two formats our girl is non-existent on...hence...not charting. 

I really hoped it would chart even if it were at damn #199 but the streams just are not there… dance with me is the only song doing over 100k on spotify and then low with 40k…

I think she's hard to work with tbh. Probably why the Republic partnership fell through.
