M.I.A.'s debut studio album 'Arular' was released twenty years ago on March 22, 2005. 

 

 

 

Setting aside what M.I.A. has unfortunately become, Arular made quite the noise online and the indie music scene in the mid aughts for its blend of genius sampling and the fusing and melding of punk, electroclash, dancehall, and hip hop genres across 14 tracks. While not a commercial success, the album was met with universal acclaim and was a truly innovative record for the time, setting her up for her later success with Kala and Paper Planes. The album contains highlights such as "Sunshowers" with brilliant social commentary that would make it hard to believe she has fallen so far in her ideological values nowadays, along with a striking cover art featuring a collage of spray-painted stencil icons of tanks, rifles and tigers.
