Is growing up in Australia fun?

Featured Replies

Growing up in Canada was fun in the sense that nature is all around us BUT as a teenager and then young adult it was and is really boring AF and kinda depressing. I always envied Australians and New Zealanders because to me you guys are like the Inverse Canada. Same legal system, similar political system, same social fabric in some ways but just in a TOTALLY opposite climate which lends itself to lots of fun and ability to have social gatherings and stuff whereas in Canada we literally hibernate for 6 months due to the insane cold we experience for many months. Even if you partake in winter sports its not a comfortable setting like the beach...it's very rugged and intense tbh. So what's it like growing up in Australia and did u like it or not and for what reasons?

Yes but I don't think it would be too fun these days, we are becoming more and more US influenced and they are scary.

I wanna know too - is there hot men walking around everywhere

Kiwi here, I'm grateful to have grown up In New Zealand, it is a great place to live (even if I do hate being here at times). I had your typical suburbia upbringing, explored the outdoors and played a lot of sport as a kid which was great (summers are amazing and we have a really strong sports culture)

My only criticism is that because we are a small country, we still suffer from a small town mindset and opportunity is limited. For example the small town mindset is really evident in the way my parents talk about their own lives. Things have changed now, my city is a lot bigger but many still flock to Australia. I probably will too at some point

Felix's/Chris' Australia :clap3:

but sure :gaycat4:

we finish school at the end of the year idk how it be fun having to finish your year in the middle of the year

new zealand is kinda boring to live in tbh. like obviously its not a terrible place but most towns/cities are small and isolated. sydney alone has more people than all of nz.
socially, aussies are wayyyy more out going/active, the weather is way better/hotter, and there's just more to do.
nz would be a great place to retire i guess but i kinda wanna move to aussie lol dont envy us here :suburban:

I didn't grow up there but used to live there and the quality of life is amazing. It can be boring in some senses but the nature is incredible and also very good food/nightlife at least in Melbourne. A lot of Australians don't realise how good they have it but I understand the housing crisis is bad and there has been a lot of inflation (still it was super affordable compared to Europe especially factoring in salaries).

Tell me about it :suburban: doesn't help that so many friends and family have already or will be making the move, I toy with the idea all the time

Also a kiwi who wants to move to Aus. NZ is giving so over vibes

Absolutely! We go through just as much **** as anyone else but community is very strong in most towns. Fair bloody dinkum, it's kinda iconic mate!

Tbh no… I don't wanna dox myself but where I live in australia gets soooo cold in winter (snow and bone chilling winds). Even Melbourne gets very cold 8 months out of the year it's basically over cast and dreary weather with not a lot to do.

I imagine growing up in Sydney or the Gold Coast is a different story (the theme parks alone make Queensland so much more fun)

I like New Zealand (and it was a great place to grow up in) but it's so damn small and isolating as a gay.

I've exhausted my options for men here so I'm going to have to go elsewhere if I want to find a husband moo.png

Broadly yes. I think Australia is a very child friendly place, most of our cities have great weather (even Melbourne), loads of access to nature and outdoors and decent schools. Your comparison about inverse Canada is pretty apt. However it can get a bit boring outside of Sydney/Melbourne as an adult. I feel lucky to have had an idyllic, outdoorsy childhood in Perth and now I live a very urban lifestyle in inner city Melbourne.

However, if you're growing up in one of those very dystopian new development suburbs with no access to services etc, that just looks grim to me :rip:

When I visited Australia Sydney and Melbourne were soooo fun, I imagine it's great actually living there

I lived in NZ for a semester and was shocked to hear that every young person basically echoed the posts in this thread :skull: that it was boring and small (and tbh living there kinda was at times). But the nature was very beautiful

It's just shocking cause from a European perspective NZ seems like a dreamland full of beautiful nature and nothing bad happening (but that was obviously also not true)
