I'm still surprised about how parasocialism in k-pop can get you this far as to have to draw upon personal attacks to defend your fav. Mind you this is happening now in gg circles where some people has the nerve to mock other people (especially young girls) that support boy groups by saying they can only like them because they are handsome or think they can be their girlfriends and at the same time, they call everyone that don't defend their fav gg misogynistic when in fact, they are being misogynistic themselves trying to make fun of that majority of young girls doing exactly the same thing they are doing (thinking they know their faves personally).

From podcasts to streamers to beauty influencers to singers, we are all in parasocial relationships in the year of 2025  I'm OK with having some sorf of parasocial intimacy with artists because I know it is not real and I would never lose my morals over them, nor assume they actually know me. Fan service is fun, who cares

 

Gay men identifying with female singers is also not paradoxical.  I don't know when and where I read this but someone said the reason is because they see their struggle for acceptance reflected in the public struggles of these singers/actors. More power to y'all and I'm truly glad you are fighting for women. 

 

But supporting "some" women (meaning your faves) while attacking "other" women for being fans of boy groups is not the female empowerment you think you are promoting. Y'all probably know who I'm talking about.

Yeah, you defined my thoughts perfectly, I think the problem comes when, as you said, people start losing morals over those parasocial relationships and/or in a lot of cases, throw around the misogyny card carelessly as an excuse when someone else gives criticism about something their female faves are doing when, a lot of times, they are also being misogynistic themselves attacking women who support boy groups.

i agree. parasocial relationships are actually normal in this day and age. everybody has them to some extent unless you don't consume any media.

 

parasocial relationships represents any relationship that you have with someone you've never met in real life and don't have any real two-way connection / communication with. so that includes tv presenters, celebrities, streamers, politicians, influencers etc… and it can be positive OR negative, when you hate a celebrity because of the image that you have of them that you got through the medias that you consume for example…

 

so yea, nearly everyone has them and it's a normal psychological reaction.

 

what is not normal is when it goes to borderline psychotic territory where nobody can make a slight critic of someone's fave without them getting angry and immediately retaliating to defend them

 

i'm no exception, i LOVE my favorite celebrities, but i'm also extremely critical of them. they can make mistakes, whether it's on purpose or not. but criticism IS needed

 

today i was critical of karina and SM for letting the right wing party control the narrative and turning karina into a right wing icon. i did that not to hate on her but because i love her as a fan and i'm sad to see that they released the basic "we will be careful from now on and protect our artists" blah blah statement instead of directly threatening to stop using their artist's image to promote their party or else consequences like other korean celebrities did this week.

 

i don't understand why it's hard for some fans to understand this without going on a "my fave makes no mistake, you're an akgae/hater" rant and acting like nothing is happening as if karina hasn't been on national evening news for two days now painting her as an example of political support with absolutely no cease and desist from SM in sight

This is not a new story.  News of the irregularities with the IPO appeared in '22 maybe?  And they applied for this warrant last month and it was rejected, so they had to reapply this month.  If Bighybe haven't been able to use all these procedural delays to shred all the evidence, they deserve to go to jail.

The Armageddon album was laughable for a group of this caliber and their stage performances have consistently gotten more manufactured and put on since Spicy which, to me, was their performance peak. EVERYTHING about aespa in 2023 was exactly what I wanted. They did an amazing tour and put out 4 amazing singles (WTMW, Hold On Tight, Spicy and Better Things). It feels to me like their image and sound has been progressively watered down since 2022/2023 and they've become more akin to Blackpink in the sense that the image is more important than the music. I've been on board with aespa because of their singing ability and signifigantly high musical output and both of these qualities have taken a big decline (in my opinion) since 2023. Hopefully this next year they can prove me wrong but I just want them to be hungry again. You are very right that this could be due entirely to their lack of rest though, and I am willing to take that into account. They do work very hard and are constantly recording music and prepping behind the scenes (even though we don't see it). I just miss the vitality that they had on stage and hope the members can strum up some confidence and bring that back for this year. 

 

quick edit: just wanted to clarify that many aspects are out of the members control and im very aware of it. i understand that they do not control every aspect of album choices, tour performances, etc. the only thing they are in control over is their performances which, to me, have become more lackluster. 

We have very different opinions. Drama was their peak, imo, and their most exciting performance. I didn't love the choreo for Spicy and I feel like SM just needs to get them a better choreographer. I also don't love the choreo for Whiplash, but I understand why vocalist girl groups always get weaker choreographies as opposed to more dance-oriented, less vocal-focused girl groups.

 

That being said, the MY World era was so exciting because it was half of their first original album (and the better half). They got to use the videos they were originally saving for their first album. This year will probably be a bit of a bust for Aespa - they're getting a single album in June, a mini between July and September and a Japanese release in October through December. I expect 2026 to be more exciting, but SM did fumble with them this year and struggled with getting releases out.

It's funny because their biggest collaboration outside of their ambassadors (Rihanna, Hunter Schaeffer, Lil Baby, Tate McRae, etc.) is with Handmaid's Tale in an attempt to speak out on women's oppression. If users like @Asscatchem and @Windy Day are claiming Karina wore the outfit on purpose for a political reason, why aren't they giving her credit for wearing a pro-LGBTQIA, pro-BLM, pro-feminist brand?

I think we're distorting facts here to push a narrative. The fans of boy groups are not exclusively women and they have a history of attacking female idols. You need to think about the background of K-pop stans, too - we started out as Britney stans and she very famously had a male "idol" whose fanbase was regularly attacking her in a misogynistic way and trying to get her to kill herself (Justin Timberlake). The group that got big in the U.S. first was Girls' Generation, and we watched Super Junior fans and TVXQ fans try to harm them and call them ******* left-and-right. The same thing happened when BlackPink started blowing up and BTS fans started hating them for no reason. Now HYBE and its stans are perpetuating the same cycle with Aespa and NewJeans.

 

Music in general has a massive issue where male artists' fans are crazy towards women. Don't be part of the problem by excusing them.
