There were six other girl groups along with Katseye on that episode of MCD.  Where was the lazy?  Excluding Fifty Fifty's hair stylist.

This week Loser and Bae Bae turned 10, marking the 10th anniversary of the most important kpop project of all time, Korea's first true global blockbuster album. The achievements of this album have been understated and forgotten in recent years. Let's talk about it, KTRL. I'll be linking sources to claims that I think might sound farfetched to newgen fans, but if I missed any, I'd be happy to dig them up if you don't believe me. I only deal in facts. :gaycat5:

Background info for the girlies who weren't there pre-2015:

Prior to this, Big Bang's most recent full group release, their 2012 EP 'Alive', became the first Korean language album to chart on the Billboard 200(source). 2012 also saw the group embark on the first truly global kpop arena tour, welcoming 800,000 fans with stops not just in Korea and Japan, but also China, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Philippines, Peru, Malaysia, USA, and England. Demand was so strong at this time that Live Nation was issuing apologies to fans who were not able to book tickets and scrambled to add extra dates in Los Angeles and New Jersey.(source) Then, later that same year, Psy reinvented his sound and image around the playbook GD popularized with the first global Korean smash hit, Gangnam Style, teaming up with GD's main co-producer and presenting a song inspired by Fantastic Baby which released earlier that year. G-Dragon was actually in the studio with Psy when he recorded the breakout smash, with other members appearing in the music video. (1) (2) In the wake of the success, G-Dragon & Co became overnight superstars, with a-list artists such as Justin Bieber, Ludacris, and Missy Elliott lining up to collaborate with pop's rising king (1) (2) (3). Members GD, Taeyang, and TOP also became fashion a-listers, being front row fixtures at every significant fashion show around this time and a common point of discussion in fashion publications all over the world, while western music publications were still relegating kpop to small headlines and niche coverage,  kickstarting kpop's relationship to the luxury fashion market. To make a long story short, Korea saw the rise of its first world stars. The demand was already through the roof for Big Bang, and YG let it boil over for three whole years before the band reunited.

On April 16, 2015, YG fired this warning shot and accompanying press release, announcing that Big Bang would be embarking on a year long 10th anniversary project, 'MADE', releasing a double single each month that would culminate in a repackaged "album", with a tour starting a week before any of the music was even out. This is notable for its innovation in that it was one of the earliest successful adoptions of the "Waterfall" release strategy, where artists drip feed an album piece by piece until dropping it as a finished body of work at a later date.

The name 'MADE' itself is also notable for its wordplay, it was both an announcement that BIGBANG and Korea as an entertainment powerhouse had finally made it, but also a reference to the idea of a "made man", a fully initiated mafioso, poking fun at the group's never-ending train of largely bogus(we don't claim Seungri and neither did the rest of the group by this point) legal scandals. The name simultaneously highlighted Big Bang's unique position as both respected rappers and top kpop idols.

Droplet #1: BIGBANG - 'M'

'Loser' and 'Bae Bae' would drop as a double single on May 1 2015, immediately claiming the #1 and #2 spot on every Korean chart while also going top 40 in Japan and Finland, topping Billboard's world songs chart and reaching #9 on the UK's independent chart. Loser would go on to be the #2 year end song on Circle for 2015, with Bae Bae landing at #4. Bae Bae is notable for its at the time, unique fusion of trap music with a melodic country chorus, which needless to say proved to be extremely influential on music at large. Bae Bae is also known for its boundary pushing erotic MV which also showcased a collaboration with famed artist Kohei Nawa, the artist lent the group a piece from their 'PixCell-Deer' series which is still on display today at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art(The Met, of Met Gala fame :gaycat5:). These two singles would go on to win countless accolades including spots in greatest k-pop songs of all time lists, digital bonsang and daesang at the GDAs, the MAMA for best music video, a PAK for Loser, and no less than 10 music show wins, at which point Big Bang became the Korean artist with the most triple crowns, a title which they still hold today.

Droplet #2: BIGBANG - 'A'

Releasing one month later on June 1, this is the one with 'Bang Bang Bang'. What more is there to say? :deadbanana4:

Alleged 4th gen leaders with the benefit of another decade of global kpop push literally do not have a worldwide hit this big. #1 Year end in Korea, charting in the US, UK, France, gold certification in Japan, over 1B streams just between YouTube and Spotify alone before we start counting Korean or Chinese services where this was the song of the year. The only Korean artists to ever touch this level of fame had gigantic payola campaigns from much larger US record labels. This was the moment where kpop became impossible to ignore on the world stage, no gimmicky virality, just a GLOBAL hit from an ESTABLISHED act. Over 6 million digital copies were sold of that one song, only half of which came from Korea. Every major Korean award which wasn't gobbled up by Loser and Bae Bae went to this.

'We Like To Party' was included in this drop too but I'm not a heterosexual so wrdgaf. At #43 it was the lowest year-end charting song by Big Bang OT5 that year.

Droplet #3: BIGBANG - 'D'

You would think that after dropping 4 singles in a single month, three of which being the biggest hits of the year, that the appetite for an artist would be completely exhausted, but that's just not true when that artist is GD. 'If You' and 'Sober' dropped July 1 and showcased different sides to Big Bang, being acoustic ballad and rock songs respectively. Another month at #1 and #2 with a different set of songs, another 5m+ seller with If You, more music show wins and universal acclaim from press not just in Asia but abroad as well, etc. This would be any other group's absolute peak in Korea(even IU covered If You, it's become a signature song), it's more of a footnote here.

Droplet #4: BIGBANG - 'E'

GD&TOP subunit's reunion with trap banger 'Zutter' didn't have much of a chance, being banned from broadcast and having an extremely bizarre music video which sees the duo literally pissing on each other and being covered in green blood, with lyrics somehow even more explicit than the visuals. Despite all of this, the most iconic subunit in kpop history still managed to peak at #4 on Circle and sell another 3m singles.  The Big Bang single here, 'Lets Not Fall In Love' fared much better, achieving similar sales to the other singles, giving BB their 2nd PAK of the era.

The 3rd album: BIGBANG - 'MADE'

Remember the overwhelming global touring demand for the group's last project? That was completely blown out of the water by MADE. The group kept on adding new legs of shows and ended up so busy that the culmination of the 10th anniversary project wouldn't arrive until 16 months after the release of 'E'. Keeping with the double single release format, MADE arrived on December 13 2016 alongside singles 'Fxxk It' and 'Last Dance'. The tracklist was exclusively made up of singles, with one b-side to prevent it from being labelled as a compilation album instead of a studio album. The album went on to be a million seller and the singles were another pair of smash hits with FXXK IT becoming their 3rd PAK from one album, something they would have achieved many more times with this album if they weren't constantly blocking themselves from #1, I'm running out of ways of different ways to articulate how successful a kpop single can become. :gaycat6:

The different legs of the 'MADE' tour evolved as the album rolled out, and ultimately repeat stops to the same cities were labelled as different tours, rather than encore shows. In total, the ~100 shows they played total for MADE under various names sold 3.4 MILLION ticketswith boxscores higher than Taylor Swift at the same venues in the US(source), and the largest single stop of the tour attracting 196,000 fans in Osaka for a 4-night residency at the Kyocera Dome, one month after a previous show where they sold another 153,000 tickets at the same venue. Needless to say, this is still by far the biggest kpop tour of all time if you add up the different legs as one tour, as modern kpop tours do.

The legacy of this album cannot be overstated. This was the first kpop megatour, arguably the first genuine global hit single by a Korean artist that wasn't driven by novelty, chart placements in countries where it was previously unthinkable for kpop to impact, etc. GD booked the first idol luxury brand deal with in the wake of MADE and created a new career avenue for kpop stars. The connections to the art world BB established from this album cycle and GD's previous solo album, 2013's 'Coup d'Etat', which also had similar collaborations, along with GD and TOP's growing notoriety as art collectors made the group unusually respected as pop stars in the traditional art world, leading to a never ending stream of art museum exhibitions across Asia either dedicated to or curated by them, with TOP even curating a $20m Sotheby's auction in 2016, paving yet another road for their successors to follow in.

The only other idol group to do this kind of terrorism to the circle year end chart was NewJeans who claimed the #1, #2, and #4 spots in 2023 just like Big Bang did in 2015. No other supposed leaders achieved anything close to this.
