I don't think anyone would've predicted the entire project smashing like this. Like the hype wasn't even that big up until release day  

This has obviously reached outside of the Kpop circle

Just speculating but I don't think YG wanted to risk an aging star who wasn't traditionally pretty fumbling their carefully constructed narrative that kpop was the next big thing in the west. 2NE1's global appeal was always being used to prop up other acts, even before they disbanded CL was being taken out of the dungeon to promote Psy and G-Dragon. YG's real return on investment into CL and 2NE1's scrapped American projects was the business connections they made to immediately open the way for BP, and I think that was more or less always the plan. CL wasn't actually allowed to release a single on iTunes and promote it until Lifted, a week after BPs first streaming farm check cleared. Hello ******* was a free soundcloud drop and a performance video with no MV. It wasn't actually added to iTunes until way later.

 

Even 2NE1's 3rd album was just a black pink songwriting camp but with guide vocals sung by a-list celebrities.

YG truly hated CL; recorded this bop then had 2NE1 disband literally the next month. Then proceeded to let her rot in the dungeon with hundreds of unreleased songs until she decided to finally leave 

 

Truly a missed summer hit; literally could have dropped this in May before AIIYL (the irony of that being a 2NE1 demo too  I think BP smashing out the gate made him give up on them immediately) the video was cute and the song was good, even had Vic Mensa fine ass in it
